Happy Friday Beanies!

I did it! I (finally!) watched Liar Game and it was FANTASTIC. I remember telling my husband after the first 2 episodes- "This is a darn smart show!" And it didn't disappoint me throughout its 12 episodes!

Things I loved:
I felt it was the perfect length. Not too long but just exciting enough. Season 2 would be great tho.

The clever plot! I found myself thinking about the games after the episode was over and that was fun in itself! I liked how they explained the games but yet didn't make it feel like we were being "talked down" to. Like I felt that they made the show with the expectation that the audience is clever. Which i really appreciated.

The acting was great! The bad guy was creepy and smart and even up till the end when you KNEW the good guy HAD to win, there was always this uncertainty. And the actors all carried off their characters fabulously.

Sorry for the rant but I REALLY liked it. If anyone hasn't seen it yet, pls, don't procrastinate like I did. Just do it! Haha. Thanks a million to all the Beanies who recommended it to me. ❤️

It did make me feel a bit wistful that I didn't watch it "real time" so I couldn't participate in the discussions or rave about it with others. I've never done that before! :( Perhaps this show would be great to watch "real time" but I can think of some dramas which would be better "marathoned" for eg if the middle got draggy.

So I'm just curious Beanies: Do you prefer to watch dramas real time or marathon them?

And if there was one show airing now that you would recommend me to watch "real time", what would it be?

Thanks! Happy happy weekend all!

I prefer watching it real time coz marathoning any drama makes me feel exhausted & my eyes hurt ^^. And additionally its all the more fun to chat with beanies about the pros and con's . Discussing every week about dramas makes ain't gonna get that everywhere.
And for the real time drama recommendation why don't you start with lucky romance its airing on 25th.
And Oh Hae young again is awesome catch up till now n then join us.....

Yeah it has this tendency to stick to you and make you think about it even after the episode has ended.
I'm not gonna get my hopes up about season 2. But if they do, they better make sure they do it well!! ?

Do you prefer to watch dramas real time or marathon them?

It depends on the drama for me, watching a drama real time make a great discussion and thinking progress cause we have time and build long anticipation, but also can backfired.
so I prefer story that heavy on the explanation and plot like Saeguk or detective story in real time .
Watching marathon is mostly my choice since I am I-viewer, I generally marathon 6 episode to make a complete view on the show. Weekend drama also good for marathon cause they all have the family and sons which different plot and sometimes you just care about one son/daughter plot so you can easily skip the other part rather than wait every week for than 10 minutes. I prefer easy/refreshing drama for marathon,

but tbh it still depends on the mood, I just stop when I can't concentrate on the drama or just dropped it.

recommend me to watch real time

Now : Beautiful Gong Shim
completed drama : Kill Me Heal Me
hope this helps^^

Hi Sancheezy!
What is beautiful gong shim about?

Required fields are marked *

it's about love story of two sisters and two men. The older sister has everything, including a beautiful appearance, and the younger sister only has a warm heart. One of the men lives on a rooftop apartment and worked as lawyer and the other man comes from a wealthy family.

it seems familiar and overused trope but I find the character really adorable and funny,
aired on Sat-Sunday , only has 2 episode, and ep 1 is kinda weird but the 2nd one is way better.,
I remember it supposed to have 20 ep but Idk now,
*please correct me if I am wrong

You are right about it.. I was about to drop after first episode but just continued ep 2 and it settles so i'm continuing the show (Sort of spoiler alert!! NGM getting gong shim justice was the best part )

I Marathon j dramas mostly and I prefer real time for K dramas mainly because of DB's awesome recaps and comments which gives the shows new dimension...

For me if I marathon at most I'll remember/think about it for a week and forget but real time goes on for months and waiting is painful (Bright side: Its only thing that can make Mondays enjoyable)

As for this week I dropped two shows (Jackpot and jo dal ho) and picked two (Mirror of witch and gong shim)
So my current drama list is oh hye young , entertainer, mirror of witch and gong shim.. With lucky romance coming next week I might drop entertainer.. (I can drop shows because DB recaps it and I'll know the ending without misery of watching and less Data charge tooo hehe )

Thank you DB.. lots of love

It's not a catty rivalry. They seem to have this strain underneath the current, but for the most part they're somewhat willing to do things for each other.

Question: Does Kim Soeun's character show growth in LG? I really liked the first few eps but had a feeling that there were not enough eps to show it.

It's fun live-watching, being with the fandom and stuff. But I end up halting shows I watch in real time because I.... I actually don't know. I just pick them up later when they've wrapped up and marathon lol.

Her character was nice and naibe but not plainly stupid. I heard her character is better than j-version(I don't know about the j-version since I didn't watch it, just based on some opinions). Her character is the naive one, and without the help from Prof Ha, she will not able to win the game. But at least she was not plainly stupid, after Prof Ha gave her some hints she can resolve it, or knock her some sense.

KGE is changed, she grew some backbone throughout the series.

I think the female character in J and K version different bc it follow itrack and the male lead also different at certain degree.
In J version, she supposed to be genuine naive and represent goodness bc it happen underground and the male is just out out of this world, he feels like the lord, he wins it all,
In Kdrama, it's happen in society so it feels weird if she still naive, and the male lead is just a smart (okay really smart) guy, earthly smart imo.

I think the story of both version cater diff audience and purpose.
I think the Kdrama version is complicated in the game delivery while the Jdrama version explain it better.
If I hadn't watch the Jdrama, I maybe wouldn't continue the Kdrama since they make it feels like they used "drama language".
I prefer the Jver better bc I see it 1st and I am familiar with Jdrama so I get the sense of it, but I may like the Kver better if I never seen the Jversion or see it later bc they it has more drama to it.

I thought there was growth but it wouldn't be right to completely change her character by the end of the game.
*spoiler*
The last episode highlighted this- the "facts" she was presented with by director Jang and Do Young was meant to make her not trust Woo Jin. But she learnt to question information others presented her with before trusting blindly. And in the end despite everything she believed in the trust she had built with Woo Jin and turned around and started shooting Do Young. So yeah! I think there was definitely growth. Just my 2 cents! :)

Congratulation on completing Liar Game!! Now i welcome you to this circle of neverending awaiting phase for Liar Game 2 LOL

It is really superb, isn't it? So impressive that i even started reading the manga after finishing the drama haha.

On your question: hmmm yess i usually marathon show bcs i hate waiting. But it is indeed true that sometimes i regret not able to chat and have fun with fellow audience compared to the "real time". But many experiences watching shows with draggy middle eps in real time kinda left a bitter taste so no, i will stick to marathon for the time being hihi xp

Some sites provides scanlations of Liar Game such as mangafox and the likes ?

If a show I like is airing, I will live watch it and have the added joy of reading about it and talking about it here on DB. Discussing the shows while they air and making guesses as to how they will go, all add to the great fun of 'dramaland'.

I'd recommend Oh Hae Young Again/Another Miss Oh for the currently airing live watch. Lots of Beanies like it, so there'll be lots of comments to enjoy together with the recap and the show itself!

Congrats on finishing Liar Game! The games were smart and well thought out, although sometimes the rules weren't that clear (not in a major way, but still) and I loved how both the good guy and the bad guy were both genius. A plot can only be as smart as its villain, after all. An air of unknown and mystery surrounded many of the characters, Kang Do-Young especially, and that kept me on the edge of my seat for entire show. Seriously, Shin Sung-Rok is probably the scariest villain character I've ever seen in a Kdrama. I loved Ha Woo-Jin's broody brainy character and Da-Jung's good-heartedness. Also, the supporting characters... My favs were the sly and sarcastic Jaime and clumsy but kind gangster Jo Dal-Goo.

I also loved the soundtrack, it was mysterious and smart while being coolly neutral, and added just the right edge. Plot, characters, and music... I think a bunch of geniuses got together and made that awesome drama.

I hardly ever watch shows in realtime, I usually don't think about watching something unless I see some kind of good review/recap on them, or if I hear other people ranting about how good it was. So, I end up missing out the fun of joining in with other people watching realtime. I don't really mind because I'm used to it, but sometimes I wish I could join in. I guess Open Threads are for people like that, too. :)

What is the difference between Ramen/noodles/and instant noodles such as Nestle's products?

:O

Sorry, I didn't even know Nestle had a brand of instant noodles, I only stick to mostly 2 brands, Shin Ramen and Maruchan. Both are good. My mom likes to put ginger, kombu seaweed, garlic, and other veggies on hand into the soup to make it healthier.

0

EZ-
I just started cooking about 6 months ago and I can tell you the types of noodles out there is amazing. No idea what the exact differences are tho. You probably have to Wikipedia that ?
I found a good and fairly easy jap ramen recipe recently too but mine wasn't from a drama ? I didn't realise there were actual recipes in God of noodles! May check it out for the fun of it. Haha.

0

Haha, I'm glad you like my moniker... I got that compliment once before in an OT not long ago and it made me grin. You make me smile, too. :D Yup, it means snacking at night. I used to do it a lot before but nowadays try not to, it makes you fat. Best to eat proper meals during the day. I like the packaged brand of ramen better than the cup kind, but you know, whatever works. :)
Nice to meet you too! Let's join up with other like-minded beanies and form a "left in the dust" drama watching circle... :D

Greetings from your noodle-slurping admirer in New Jersey. ;-)

My name is PakalanaPikake, and I am powerless over udon...

and ramyun, saimin, ho fun, and Spaetzel, too!

Our local Costco had a deal on Nongshim udon recently, and I've been enjoying it while watching Kdramas and fangirling here at DB. I like to crack an egg into it as it cooks, a trick I first saw in COFFEE PRINCE, methinks.

When I moved to Honolulu, I used to shop in the Asian markets downtown around Maunakea Street, where I discovered Korean udon and ramen from all over. (Back home in Jersey, Oodles of Noodles was about all you could find in supermarkets.) I couldn't read much on the packaging. To this day I still fondly think of it as "Korean Thermonuclear."

Left in the dust indeed... and glad for the company. ;-)

0

@PakalanaPikake: Yaay I forgot to mention the crucial ingredient, the egg! Thanx for reminding me! XD Haha we're both late-watchers and noodle lovers! Let's be friends!

0

*waves at MRA*

Splendid idea, chingu!

*passes regulation bowl of saimin with cha siu, scallions, and tempura shrimp*

Yeah, adding an egg makes it so much better. If I need it to stick to the ribs, I throw in two. While I'm boiling the water, I often also add frozen mixed veggies.

It's been a dog's age since I've had kamaboko in the house. Might have to trek to the Chinese grocery for some -- and to look for Shin Black and Namja ramyun.

Did you see Ryu Seung-Ryong's commercial for Namja ramyun? JavaBeans did a great article on it. Nearly keeled over -- the choice of music is priceless.

https://youtu.be/zB8RA0pSjnw

A terrific resource for aficionadas of boiled flour products: The Ramen Rater (dot) com -- Reviewing Instant Noodles Since 2002! It's a lot of fun, and the guy writes entertaining reviews of ramen and its relatives from around the world. There are more brands than you can shake a stick at.

Bon apetit!

I couldn't reply to you down below where you used the term, but please try to remember that the term "jap" is a racial slur used by Americans during WWII. While I've worked with Japanese people who reside in Japan and they had never heard of it as a slur so were unphased by it, I can assure you that Japanese-Americans recognize and do not like it.

Michykdrama -

Glad you enjoyed Liar Game!

Regarding your real time/marathon question, it's interesting. I watch in "sort of" real time, but I watch on the U.S. broadcast tv schedule rather than the Korean schedule, so I'm always behind from everyone else who's watching in "real" real time. If has its downside in that I can't fully participate in the real time recap comments, but the good thing is that by the time dramas show up here, I have a pretty good idea of what's good and what's not, what's worth watching and what I'm skipping. It also works for my schedule, so that's always good. Full-on marathoning I've never really tried, for lack of time.

Haha yeah I guess I don't really fully "marathon" either. I watch a bunch of episodes in a row, it depends on how addictive the show is, and what is going on in real life. (Or if it's like 3 am and I really need to sleep haha)
So yeah full on marathoning I've not really done too

As for Marathon vs. Real time, I used to only watch closer to marathon style (2, 3, 4 eps. a day til I was done). But then I watched Signal, and now I really like watching real time. I usually watch one--maybe maybe two--real time and one to fill in all the gaps for the other days.

I started with only marathoning (binging really, like a true kdrama addict) But I've transitioned to mainly live-watching because it helps control my binging tendencies when I can't afford to stay up till 3 am watching tv. Plus, I've found it actually helps me finish more dramas because it makes it easier to get through the draggy parts (for some reason I can never force myself to fastforward anything). However I still marathon on weekends and breaks, mostly working through my backlog. For me it works to do both. When real life is super busy, live watch only. When real life slows down, marathon time.

I've been wondering though, when watching completed shows does anyone else have a problem with spoiling themselves by reading ahead in the db recaps and then have trouble finishing the actual drama?

It has gotten really ridiculous, this obsession of mine. I have always preferred to binge watch TV shows. There are some I do prefer to watch live though.

Since everyone will definitely recommend Oh Hae Young (it is worth the hype!), I'm going to say God: Master of Noodles. This is also pretty good and worth watching live.

Not watching LIAR GAME... but am following ANOTHER MISS OH in what passes for real time when you live on the East Coast of Turtle Island and don't speak Korean. Because of having to wait for subtitles, I'm always going to be late to the party. Oh, well.

My preferred manner of watching Kdramas is usually to marathon them -- mainly so I can remember what's going on, especially in sageuks and productions with a Cast of Thousands. I read the DB recaps, and also ferret out reviews to help give me a handle on the action. I don't care about spoilers as I really want to be able to follow the plot, character development, etc.

I love joining in the camaraderie of discussing a production with fellow drama fans, but for vintage ones, it's not really possible -- unless someone mentions one on an OT, and then we can yak in real time.

Started watching DEAR MY FRIENDS in real time, but will have to drop it. I can't handle it in addition to MISS OH, which I love to bits enough to watch at least three times through (i.e., twice raw while awaiting subtitles).

I've left HWAJUNG languishing for at least a week -- or is it two already?!? -- and want to get back to it. Have been enjoying CSW as Gwanghae, and find the history of the period interesting (i.e., decline of Ming, rise of Later Jin).

Hi, EZ!

Hmm. If this is only going to be your second sageuk, might I suggest the KING'S DAUGHTER, SU BAEK-HYANG? The cast is terrific, the OTP is played by Seo Hyun-Jin and Jo Hyun-Jae, there's bromance, espionage, birth secrets, comic relief... and a gorgeous sound track, with sets and costumes to match. Memorable characters, in particular King Muryeong, who set the standard for me for Korean monarchs. Also about five romances woven through the course of the story, which spans several generations, and epic battles and sword fights. Once I started watching, I couldn't stop. Granted, it's 108 episodes, but they're only about half an hour, so the overall running time is the same as HWAJUNG, but with comparatively less horsing around with intransigent ministers.

Back to SPLENDID POLITICS:

I've been enjoying HWAJUNG for a couple of reasons: the historical personage Gwanghae, Joseon foreign relations with Ming and Inner Jin, a feisty cross-dressing heroine who works in high tech, and Cha Seung-Won -- not necessarily in that order. ;-)

I had marathoned my way through episode 26, but then was distracted when ANOTHER MISS OH and DEAR MY FRIENDS started. It's been about two weeks, so it's getting a bit hazy...

I've been enjoying CSW's acting, which is nuanced and subtle -- as is to be expected of a poker player. A serious political rival has just appeared on the scene, which bodes ill. There has been plenty of conspiracy and dirty tricks, along with a prophecy that triggers political bloodshed reminiscent of that in ILJIMAE.

I got interested in the Imjin War when watching THE KING'S FACE, and learned about Gwanghae's role in protecting his people when the court and nobility ran away -- and the role played by Yi Sun Shin. That led me to watch RAGING CURRENTS, which was excellent! I'd heard about the turtle ships, but didn't know about his strategic use of the tides to wipe out the invading flotilla. That led to another flick, HEAVEN'S SOLDIERS, a Joseon "Saving Admiral Yi." WAR OF THE ARROWS, which deals with a different aspect of Joseon technology, was also a terrific show, and dealt with the Manchu invasions. I was impressed that the invaders actually spoke Manchurian -- which was subtitled in Korean. Fascinating.

Maybe this is more info than you bargained for. I hope it wasn't too much. ;-)

To your question: Do you prefer to watch dramas real time or marathon them?

I would have to say, I prefer to marathon dramas which makes it difficult for me to wait a week for the next episode. Every time beanies go crazy about a drama and say stuff like they are dying for the next episode, I decide to marathon them.
Marathoned recently: DOTS, Signal, SFD
But slow episodes that doesn't give you intense hunger to watch the next and lets you relax as you watch, I watch in real time.
Watching in real time: Oh Hae Young Again, Mirror of the Witch

If a drama seems to be really good, I wait and watch it with my DH, so I really can't do it real-time. We just finished Signal, and after we would watch an episode I would go back and read through the DB recaps. It's not quite the same, but I'll give up a lot to watch a drama with him. :-)

I ventured back into dramaland with 2 rom coms

- oh hae young
- beautiful gong shim

i was actually more excited about the second but ended up loving the first ....

BGS looks like a fantastic idea on paper but the execution is very poor. the whole setup feels disjointed and it just lacks the connect- eg the bromance b/w the 2 men was all full of awkward pauses and not a single witty dialogue. The lead actress is at least a decade younger than everyone on the show. i usually have no problems with age gaps but here it shows esp with the wig. i wish NGM had signed something better

so right now, i'm completely hooked on OHY. ;ove, love, love it.

and cautiously optimistic abt mirror of the witch - i love the fantasy part not sure how the romance is going to pan out

Lol, same here. There's so much doom and gloom in kdramas nowadays. Only those two actually had me interested for awhile. And Five Children, also.

I thought Entertainer would be fun, but the first few episodes were dreary. It's only recently that it's catching up. I still hate the damned forced Ji Sung-Hyeri loveline though. I now understand what all those people who hated JSY in Doctor Stranger were feeling. Except that loveline in Doctor Stranger actually came out of somewhere.

Gong Shim has a good set of leads, but the story is kinda meh at this point. Still sticking out for that, though.

Now Lucky Romance is coming, then maybe there'll be another fun show.

For me, both of these dramas are a happy surprise. *spoilers* Mr. Shinwha, you are gonna be in SO much trouble when Now Miss Oh learns about how you - YOU - were the one who ruined her wedding (not to mention her beau is in jail!!) I know kdramas get life from misunderstandings but this is over the top! In a good way. Ex Miss Oh, too, has a story that will jerk and twist Mr. Shinwha around (another mother dearest, gah).

As for Beaturiful Gog Shim, I just love the ice cream bar sucking nonchalant lawyer Dan Tae - what does he have up his sleeve? Brothers and sisters mix up mismatch. Kdramas, you get me every time, love it all!

i actually couldnt get into oh hae young, maybe i should try again since people here love it. as for BGS i really like watching, its light and fun but im not sure how they will carry the story till ep 20. as for the bromance i feel like that was the point, they put on a fake bromance so it made for a awkward situation. as for mirror of witch, people have said first ep is good but i dont think im gonna watch it, i just dont like the fact that the lead actress is 15 yrs old compared to the lead actor who is 29 close to 30. i'd be fine if there was no romance but clearly there will be and im not up for that.

I think that because the drama is a fairy tale in a historical setting the age gap is tolerable. In fairy tales the heroines are young teens. Also in the past, girls were considered to be women as soon as they reached puberty in their early teens. Prolonged adolescence is a 20th century thing. That kind of age gap between partners would have been much more likely 200 years ago.
If we can accept actors who are barely twenty playing surgeons, we can imagine a 15 year old playing the part of a just turning 17 year old.

But the issue isn't just of the character ages, it's the fact that they cast a minor as the romantic lead to a man literally twice her age. It doesn't matter the story, the issue is with the casting decision. There's already a debate about casting much younger actresses with older actors and now we're being told it's acceptable to view a young high school girl as the romantic partner of a much older man.

everything you said MK, its not characters age, like i would be fine if legal adults where playing 17 years olds, since apprently they would both be 17 in character but adults out of of character so there nothing problematic about it. its the fact of the real life age difference, where the actress literally is a kid and the male lead is pretty much a 30 year old. its too perverse/predatory-ish to me tbh and really problematic. i know back in the day it was common but there's a reason why society changed and things like that arent allowed anymore, people can literally be put in jail for it now. also i rather have grown adults whether they be twenty somethings playing genius then a child romancing with a 30 year old. historical accuracy isnt gonna change my mind when there is a lot of inaccurate historical stuff being portrayed or changed up anyways. ive seen reaching explanation to justify it but no amount of mental gymnastic is gonna change anything. like MK said people on here are already negative about the super younger women with older men even when they are both adults yet many are coming up with explanations as to why this is ok. its definitely isnt about the characters or story. MK said it well. im not stopping anyone from watching it but i cant accept an actual minor having a love line with a grown men. i think that is a pretty reasonable and valid reason for me not to watch, too bad.

Happy Friday beanies!! It's friday, right?

Taking a break from dramas to actually learn Korean. I get easily distracted but there's progress lol.

Excited for Lucky Romance! Jungpal-ah! And I'll start watching Dear My Friends. I have a soft spot for the elderly and I'm happy these great actors will have their spotlight.

Still not starting Juhan Shuttai to wait for more eps and my heart still isn't over N No Tame Ni. My heart is craving something so so romantic and heartbreaking. Something I'll regret watching afterwards(in a good way hah). But then again learning Korean is already giving me headaches T.T

Nix - I am so glad you mentioned learning Korean! I've started that myself and have felt a little foolish about it because I was worried I was the only one and showing signs of an abnormal obsession. But I continue to watch the dramas because I listen for the latest things I've learned. While I do not understand what they are saying yet, I am happy to say I am catching more and more words and phrases!

Are you learning to read and write hangul or just the phonetically spelled Korean words. I decided to jump in with the hangul and I am slow slow slow. :)

I self-learn it and now my Korean is at least enough to knock some words without subtitle. Like, at least I now the common structure of the sentence then I tried to understand the meaning of the sentence through my (still) limited vocabs. It's relatively easy compared to English for conversation. But I learn to understand, not to speak. So I'm still having a hard time to form the sentences. Well at least if I go to Korea I'll be able to ask for directions.
I think the key is exposure. The more you watch dramas and/or variety shows, listen to songs, you'll get a knack on what is being said. And do learn the structure/grammar, it helps a lot.

It's great that you all are learning Korean! I actually got started through dramas too, so you're definitely not the only ones out there. It gets easier the longer you do it, so don't give up!

Also, pro tip: Find out if there are any Korean churches in your area! A lot of them will have weekend classes, mostly intended for second-gens or adoptees but also open to non-Koreans. It's helpful to have structured learning, especially when you're starting out.

I have been studying Korean now for 4 and a half years and hace reached Intermediate level. I have visited Korea 5 times in the last 3 years. So, no, you are not alone.

I tried learning Korean a while ago but laziness beat me haha. I only ended up learning how to read and write hangul. Of course, the pronounciation is a different story lol.

Right now, I'm trying to construct basic sentences and learning basic words. It's so so satisfying to understand (simple) sentences even if I'm mostly deducing using a word or two.

Good luck to us beanies!

Ooh yes! I'm thinking about learning Korean too! You aren't alone at all!

I think sometimes the actual meaning gets lost in the subs and I don't get to enjoy the drama as much. Like when I watch shows in Mandarin (which i understand), I realise the English subs don't always do justice to the real meaning.

How are you starting to learn Korean? Classes? Internet? YouTube? ?

I'm learning through a variety of sources right now. I bought some books through TalkToMeInKorean.com and use their online audio files and .pdfs. I am watch some youtube videos. My hope is that I can get some basics down and then I'm thinking about asking my family for a tutor for Christmas. I'm hoping to take a trip eventually but will consider it a success if I can watch a drama without subs and mostly understand what they are saying.

Your aim is worthy but extremely difficult. I have a Korean friend who has studied English for 17 years and speaks very good conversational English, she studied for her Masters Degree in English in the UK, and she has even given lectures in English to foreign visitors to Korea. However, she finds it extremely difficult to follow an English language drama without subtitles. She says people speak too fast, compound words and speak in accents.

We've hosted many Japanese students over the years. I remember one (who was very proud of his English skills) being totally confused about the English word, "ja." As is "didja, wouldja, shouldja, etc."
He said that everyone said it--but he didn't know what it meant.
We finally figured out he was talking about "you: when it follows a word ending in "D" is pronounced, "ja." And when it doesn't it is pronounced "ya." Nobody ever says "you."

0

Hi, Anna...

I sometimes have a hard time following American TV shows, and I'm a native speaker. Lazy enunciation drives me berserk. After I rewind three or four times, I just give up.

Re: speaking too fast

I used to work as a secretary/receptionist, and noticed that many folks talk too darn fast... I find it particularly irritating when dealing with fast-talking customer service people. Granted, they might have a quota of calls to handle. But if your customer cannot understand you, how effective or efficient is that for the company?

end rant

I am hoping to spend a few weeks next summer in Seoul through an exchange in my grad program, but man I wish I would have been able to do it as an undergrad and spend an entire semester or even year abroad ... taking language classes is a great start - seems like there is a lot more scholarship money availible for the "less learned" languages - i.e. anything other than Spanish, French, German, etc. That's how my trip will be funded anyway! Super jealous that you are getting to start as an undergrad tho - looking back I would have loooved to focus on international relations in my studies- so many amazing opportunities!! Yay you :)

I am listening to few Korean classical song..Classic is always gold ❤

Just to list some of dramas which the female lead / female character are badass and I really love it.. These drama is not necessarily high rated, but I always love if there is a badass, smart female lead but at the same time fragile inside.

1) I Hear Your Voice. - Lee Bo Young was the reason I watched and loved this drama.

2) Ms Temper & Nam Jung Ki - I am still having the withdrawal from this drama. Gosh what not to love about this drama. Lee Yo Won is ❤

3) Empress Ki - I love all women in this drama. Ha Hi Won is love.

4) Cruel Palace & I Have A Lover - What not to love about Kim Hyun Joo?

5) Yong Pal - Yes Yong pal was a mess. but I am satisfied with Kim Tae Here's character here.

6) The Promise - Homai my current addiction. All women here are "monsters". lol. Lee Yoo Ri is my fav and her character is no joke here.

Of course there are many more badass female lead, here are only few of them.

Have a nice weekend beanies.

Why is Dramaworld rubbing me up the wrong way? I just feel like now is not the time. I dont know. It feels so intrusive and rude? Like I watched one episode, and with the history we have right now, and the almost 0% Asian actors we have in Hollywood, I just feel offended that we are now making an 'asian' drama about a white person .. IDK

With less than 6% of Americans being "Asian" and half of that number being Filipinos, you can't be expecting too many Asian actors. Besides "Asian" and "white"? Please! How about "Asian" and "Western" or "Asian" and "Caucasian". I don't put my actors into tribal slots; I live in a region that has many races and many ppl of mixed races, so I don't look at the world that way.

that percentage stuff is a weak excuse for the lack of representation of asian characters, im using it as a general term, since it includes south east, central, south, north east and middle easterns. there are plenty of asian actors, they just dont get the opportunity to get roles cause most characters by default go to white actors. that percentage is probably the same logic people in charge go to leading to lack of representation for not just asian but other people of color.

Happy Friday Open Thread,
can't believe I take a break from prime time drama
A good Wife - TW 2013 : yizhen has 7 years marriage and try to her best but the loneliness, workaholic husband and the stress of not having a grandchild for her perfectionist parents-in-law is pushing her to a breaking point. One day, she meets a man in the bookstore. This is beautiful story, it's about separation, finding themselves, knowing what's wrong and how to move on . It has full of heart and really touch the subject of marriage & divorce. The performance is really good, the directing and the color also really good (reminds me of in between, which also has Darren). My only complain is I hope it has more episode for the 2nd lead to have more, just more of something. I regret avoiding the show earlier since I has this uncanny feeling about affair theme but this drama give me exactly what I want. It doesn't use the usual trope of who is wrong or family feud as the central of the story but it's how it just happen to be like that.
Beautiful Gong Shim : I love this drama and I hope the friendship of the 3 new friends will last longer. It may look disjointed and slow at 1st episode but I enjoy the character interaction. They just different yet individually interesting, they just look fun. They all has problem but they tried on their own way to solve it.
My Amazing Boyfriend : I am gonna miss this show badly. It feels like the show choose to be idol drama when they can be awesome based on the writing. It's a drama that always find it's way when I thought about it and still manage to look cute and fluffy,
and did anybody watch Happy Home ?? (I am addicting to this one, I just like what it showed me no matter how I am annoyed by it)
OHY : Idk why I still think about Taejin, the plot is still about the noble idiocy after effect to the lead, like when it didn't happen to the OTP of the show. I feel weird for not getting the show charm, it's good, just feel so familiar for me and I can see how it gonna go, it just has very good directing and beautiful words at dialogue when they just need to be direct imo.
Five is enough : Oh god this is cute, Love this one so much,

Watched "My Amazing Boyfriend" for fluff, but ended up loving it and marathoning it. My take on the ending is that of OTP is expecting a "Monster Que Junior" and due to the mother/child physical interaction, she now is able to self-repair. Which, of course, demands a Season 2!

Beautiful Gongshim is filming in my neighborhood (the park by the main characters' house is filmed in my park, even though their supposed address is in Seoul), so I got to hear Namgoong Min yelling at Hyun-ah the other day. IT WAS AWESOME. His voice is even more wonderful in person. I also keep forgetting how not-tall he is... (They seem to be filming pretty well ahead of schedule. They've been around for at least a month and a half already.)

I hadn't realized it was airing already, though, so I went and downloaded the first two episodes. It's RIDICULOUS. I love it so much. Namgoong Min and Hyun-ah are both playing hysterically weird characters. She eats soap when drunk! He whimpers and cries when he drops his sweet potato on the ground! They SNUGGLE! He WEARS HER WIG!

But the second lead guy (I must have missed his previous dramas, so I don't know him) is so squishy and precious, I love him so much. I just want him to be happy forever so he can always smile his wrinkly-face smile. Squee!

Ahem. In non-drama stuff, my job is finally using my Korean-language ability to have me translate textbooks. (I work for an English hagwon, and they want to use the content of a particular book but it's only available in Korean, so I get to translate the whole damn thing.) My original goal was always to be a translator, so I'm using it as experience and seeing how well it works for me, in case I want to try for that goal again... So far, I'm really enjoying it, and I think I'm doing a decent job so far. So yay!

ah gong shim is precious, I love all the character too. They seems have a real life problem. The three people friendship is beautiful, I hope it last longer and didn't wreck easily.
I think the best part of BG for me is the way they talk and their voice, it's charming and distinctive for each character.
How NGM chara laugh, hoe the 2nd lead guy smile and how weird yet fascinating gong shim is.
the 2nd lead guy is On Joo-Wan, the only drama I remember about him is Punch and he is so adorable in this drama.

I agree with what someone upthread said. I like the way the show has started out, and I think it will gel. I think that the show has a lot more emphasis on developing friendships than a typical RomCom and that might seem strange. But I am definitely open to them trying something new, even if it's just tonally.

Namgoong Min is a riot, I follow his instagram and he's adorable. The thing about his height is actually played up in My Secret Hotel as the two male leads have to split a room and Min gives us his first full on shirtless scene which is very intimidating to Jin Yeehan's character so he stands on his toes a bit and emphasizes he's taller.

The squishy male lead from this show can also be enjoyed as a hapless student/unemployed slacker in Surplus Princess, and the concerned and worried big brother in Village: Secret of Achiara. Notably, he must be awesome in real life because he snagged the affections of his Surplus Princess costar in real life; they're publicly dating. You can see her on Monster playing the shrill and slightly crazy chaebol daughter.

The bromance has me dying, I just love it. Even though the birth secret and the identical egg allergies are eyeroll-worthy, they're adorable together and I can't stop watching them.

I've loved NGM for years, ever since the awful (AWFUL) One Fine Day--he was literally the only reason I watched that drama! My husband I think is a little jealous... When we were watching them filming the other day, he mentioned pretty loudly that NGM is kind of short, and I'm pretty sure he was overheard. (I'm so sorry, NGM! I love you! 0

Well ... to cut her a bit of slack, his competition was Gong Yoo! No slouch in the voice Dept himself and maybe it was GY's height that got her? (but, as you point out ... DOLPHINS!!!) She was an idiot and she didn't deserve NGM, that's all ?

Gong Yoo had such terrible hair, though...

I am also loving Beautiful Gongshim: dying laughing at the comedic beats (omg NG in that wig), feeling major SLS coming on, etc., but am I the only one still adjusting to Namgoong Min as a non-psychopath? Maybe because I've only seen his recent work but when he smiled that smile at his microwaved meals, I was immediately expecting their violent demise. Love love love that he is NOT that character anymore though and looking forward to more adorable quirky-ness from this drama!

This isn't the first time, but it's the first drama since I've lived here that's using it as a major filming location, which is nice. They even have a little sign up apologizing for disrupting everyone's use of the playground.

Prior to his psychotic turn, NGM actually did a lot of second leading roles where he was precious and had really sly comedic timing, so it's more of a return to his previous style. Upgraded to flat-out hilarious, of course. I've watched that wig scene a few too many times today.

Happy friday

So many drama to watch for now and the new 3 dramas that premiered this week also watchable

Dear My Friends: it's a cute drama full of seniors and their struggle with their family and their life

Mirror of The Witch: it's pretty exciting and beautifully shot, and amazing graphics, nice plot too. looking forward for tonight episode
I don't watch saguks usually unless it's fantasy

Beautiful Gong Shim: the first episode wasn't that gripping but the second was pretty good and i had a good laugh too

GMB: i stopped watching for like 6 episodes i was reading the recaps only, i watched the last episode it ended nicely

Master Of Revenge: i was really angry at the end of episodes 7, Tae Ha got out of jail with nobody waiting for him it was sad, and with MM getting stabbed grrrrrr it was too much
But the next episode made it up a little

But still the writer loads a lot of stuff in one episode i don't know how he manages to come up with all these ideas and connect all the characters together, and I think what happened to Tae Ha isn't logical, but i still like the drama since i am into dark thrilling shows

That's all
Have a nice weekend

Tae Ha - I'm afraid the no show is going to turn him bitter and against his old friends. Esp since he served time in lieu of Yeo Kyung (well, in this scenario anyhoot. Self-defense against rape or attempted rape, um I have issues that she had to fear serving time for accidentally killing her attacker , but...)

It's was a very sad ending to ep 7 with the 4 former orphans ending in the worst of circumstances. So undeserved, such kdrama drama!

Monster - Arghhh! Are we there yet! ( sigh long way to go )
Master of revenge - Can they care a little about me !!!!! I'm gonna get a dramaland heart attack. I was soon the edge tip toeing at the start of the Wednesday episode.
Mirror of the witch - I hated the first episode. Loved the 2nd ep recap. So gonna follow Db recaps.^^
Thinking of Lu Xieng Bei - That's what I do after I watch its episodes think about the lead actor... He is soooo what should I say handsome, cute, gahhh I'm out of words. Apart it whenever I watch a Cdrama can't help but think something is lacking I still can't pinpoint exactly coz I haven't watched many. Entertainer - A series of funny antics this is not, but what it's turning out to be is just fine with me. Liking everyone in this.

Marriage Contract - Still quite good.

Mr. Selfridge - Things falling a part everywhere. So sad.

Luther - After watching the first season, I recently started watching season 2 since one of the local PBS stations starting showing this. Oh my goodness, the situations the main character finds himself in! Certainly not for the weak!

That's all for now. ....... Everyone take care and have a great Friday!

@ Entertainer, I think that's been pretty common reaction going into it. We were all expecting light and hilarious and got sexual assault charges within the first ten(ish?) minutes. But once you readjust the Overton window, it's amazing. The funny is still there (and the band--THE BAND), you just get some darker stuff too. I love it!

It's super duper late i know it but i finally finished It's Okay It's Love!!!

That show is GLORIOUSLY WELL DONE i can't believe i keep postponing this one for years. My fav part out of all good things in this drama: how the romantic relationship develops in such an interesting organic way. Chemistry is seriously strong in this ensemble whether between the couple or everyone else.

I relate to this drama in a personal level bcs i am Psychology student myself. Altho at times few cases are glossed over with simplification and suddenly cured, the message remains the same; we are all weird, but it's okay. I find that really beautiful.

On the side note, is Jo In Sung always this handsome? Too many close-up scene and he makes me blushed all the time they zoom in to his gorgeous face ?

All right. Current watching:
Mrs. Temper. Only watched 2 first ep and will continue soon. I like how they use comical effect on this lol
Noodles. 2 first ep is so dark idk if i do want to watch it aside Jung Yumi being strikingly pretty and the cute bickering between estranged noodles couple. Anyone?

And been hearing good things about Oh Hae Young Again, is it that good?

Varshow. 1N2D - Yoon Si Yoon is blessing, i am sorry for doubting you, dearest Donggu. RM - Lee Je hoon is such a cutie, love how the cast keep talking abt Signal with him instead of the movie he actually promotes? And Lee Je Hoon is in Happy Together which engsub is already out!!

Not kdrama - Game of Throne is in two days!!! I don't even remember when the last time i feel hopeful for the next episode while watching this show LOL

Anyway happy weekend beanies!

Glad you enjoyed It's Okay It's Love! When I watched it, I found it quite great also.

Regarding the close-ups of Jo In-sung (and everybody else), I believe that's the director's style. If I remember correctly, he also directed That Winter The Wind Blows and he did the same thing.

I finally marathoned It's Okay, That's Love too... and loved it. I am anyway partial towards Gong Hyo Jin, but the rest of the cast was lovely as well. The relationship between the leads is so cool. For e.g., it was nice that they respected each other's work. And, the one between the two exes was again so mature. (I didn't like the resolution of the TV producer's romantic arc... but that's nitpicking.)

And yes, Jo In Sung is soooo hot! This is going to sound v weird, but the way he carries himself reminds me of Lee Min Ho. These guys move/carry themselves in a measured way that they know makes them look good. But, it's not obnoxious or in-your-face. OKAY, I have officially overanalysed this :P

And yes, Oh Hae Young is good. It's very popular here, in any case. I am not quite following it. Taking my cue from DB recaps and comments, and watching the cute episodes a.k.a. episodes 3 and 4 so far (or so methinks).

I actually like Gong Hyo Jin but her character sometimes was just plainly annoying lol. So agree with your point. They actually talk, like a normal couple! I love how they keep talking in the car, in various places, talking about their job. It's so nice to see their interaction.

Oh you mean Dr. Jo & his ex? Their situation is kinda icky but yes to talk it out and open like that. The pd tho, that's too nice for him after cheating ugh. Sookwang using him at the end makes me happy ?

I sooo understand your point. He basically acts like jerks in such an adorable, endearing way that unconsiously attracts you anyway. This guy is good.

Yep everyone's been talking about it that makes me want to watch it too. Hope it stays good till the end (cross fingers)

Hi, vongole!

If you have not done so already, you might want to see THE CLASSIC, which I watched a day or two ago. JIS is in it, in a play-within-a-movie, and running around in the rain. Plenty of opportunity to conduct fruitful motion studies...

BTW, the music is terrific.

Also in the cast is Cha Seung-Won. It's great fun to watch him, too, especially in the folk dancing class. Made me want to waltz, actually.

I forgot to mention this:

Years ago I studied Alexander Technique. It was developed by an Australian elocutionist who lost his voice, and figured out that how he was using his body was causing the problem -- along with a way to remedy it. There's a good short article here:

http://www.alexandercenter.com/pa/stringsii.html

I had an A-HA! moment when watching episode 58 of THE KING'S DAUGHTER, SU BAEK-HYANG. In the opening scenes, Kuchon rides up to Prince JinMu and his bodyguard to go hunting. Kuchon is the tracker, and soon picks up the scent. JM calls dibs on the first boar, and grabs his bow. Kuchon proceeds to give JinMu a lesson in proper stance for archers that reminded me of an Alexander lesson I had. (Not for archery, but for my slouchy posture, courtesy of scoliosis.)

Then Kuchon himself assumes the stance, and it blew my mind. Watching him move brought tears to my eyes.

Not that I'm an expert, but if Yoon Tae-Young is not an Alexander Technique student, I'll eat my gat.

His performance as a mute is stunning, as he conveys immense emotion with his eyes and body language.

0

Thanks so much, PakalanaPikake.

I am going to check out the movie. Study JIS moving, you say? I am in! :P. Sucker for good OSTs too. Sidenote: currently watching J-drama Pride, and this has increased my love for Queen manifold.

Oooh, the Alexander Technique - looks fascinating. I am going to check it out. I am sure you're right about actors using it... don't go eating your gat now :)

Yoon Shi Yoon is a genuine happy pill esp for the 1N2D group. I mean he is so lovable the grupmy Joonyoung doesn't know what to make of him, Joon Ho harasses him but I actually think it makes JH feel bad, and Defconn defends him like a brother. ♥

Joonyoung doesn't want his mysterious and cool image to be tarnished, now, does he.

I did not like his opening declaration abt ratings reaching 50 percent cos of him. From the first episode, I felt he seemed too guarded with his image (the over positivity felt fake, am sorry) even without watching the tent convo. Hopefully, he learns to relax and blends in better with time (3 mnths). After two days, he is already becoming corrupted - I did not say "go", I said "goat". I really really really really hope to see his fun and quirky side.

J drama;

Currently watching ‘Yutori Desuga Nanika’, ‘Sekai ichi Muzukasii Koi’ ‘ Sleeper Hit’ and I am reluctantly watching ‘Love Song’
Why reluctantly watching ‘Love Song’? because the actor and the actress have more than 20 years old age gap in real life and the drama shows it somehow.
‘ Sleeper Hit’ is based on a comic book. The actors in the drama are gems. Kuroki Haru plays a heroine who just started working as an editor of a comic magazine and she is an ex Judo player. She tackles her work with Judo spirit and cares for her comic writers very much, that is a typical nice heroine per se but Kuroki manages to portray an energetic and genuine female worker in her work environment where all her colleagues are male without over done heroine tone from a typical comic book based drama. There is something so warm in her smile ,, that I can see that some boys fall for her though she is not a typical pretty face. The rest of the cast are veteran actors and it is nice to watch their acting chops.
‘Yutori desuga Nanika’—oh, this is a hard title to translate into English and the dialogues are also difficult to translate into English as well! The title kind of implies’ So what is wrong with (us) Yutori generation( born between 1987 to 2004)?’. Basically main lead( played by Okada Masaki) is always looked down by other generations because he is one of the Japanese generation of students educated under the ‘pressure free’ system( they are called Yutori Sedai( Yutori Generation)). They are ridiculed for their lack of knowledge and their not- so- typical Japanese attitude and mentality( they are often labelled and criticized that they are not good at coping with stress, they do not take an initiative, they care for their private life more than their company life),,,, thus comes his remark ‘Yutori desuga Nanika’= yeah, I am from the generation and so what?
This drama focus on certain problems that three men from this generation face. I love actors here( Okada Masaki, Matsuzaka Toori, Yagira Yuuya) I think the three( and Okada’s GF) represents some issues among the generation and their struggle in the rigid Japanese society.
I am watching it raw and found that the dialogues and their thoughts are funny. I hope that a god send translator will do a brilliant job with this drama!!

‘Sekai ichi Muzukasii Koi’ the main character, hotel owner, Samejima is such a dork when it comes to love and sometimes it is painful to watch him because he has no skills when it comes to love. There is no fluff in this drama like K drama romance yet I still enjoy this drama. though he is a ruthless hotel owner he is so helpless with his love life that I cannot help cheering for him.

‘Yutori desuga Nanika’
love this..
the episode when he storm his friend and angry at the wrong delivery make me storm in my seat (yesss!!),
I think I watch 3 ep Raw but it's hard to understand bc the dialog is difficult for me too

‘Love Song’ : I think they actually talked about it in the drama, I remember someone saying she is too young for him and also the other side, the friend said he is "kusojiji?", but the story touched me cause I want her to actually speech at her friends wedding, or maybe sing

'Kusojijii' is a derigatory way of calling' old man'
I also hope to see that she will give her speech or sing at her friends' wedding. I like to see see how she learn to like herself and grows up. However, I am not that interesting in the love relationship. The actor, Fukuyama Masaharu is actually 47 years old and Fujiwara Sakura( this is her debut drama) is only 20 years old. She actually looks younger than 20 years old !

and like @alua I also think he just treat her like a kid he cares not a woman, and maybe just maybe the father-daughter relationship since she is in awe for him but just that.

<Why reluctantly watching ‘Love Song’? because the actor and the actress have more than 20 years old age gap in real life and the drama shows it somehow.

I'm still watching on the assumption that they're father and daughter, but I haven't watched ep. 6 yet – up to 5, I thought was pretty clear that he only sees her as a 'kid', while she just has a major crush. I don't get any sense of 'romantic' chemistry between them.

Been watching 'Sleeper Hit' too, but it doesn't quite pull me in. I can't quite warm to the lead actress/her character and although the rest of the cast is solid enough it's maybe just a bit too much of a "serial" drama for me. I mean, it has its heart in the right place and all kinds of good messages come with it, but I feel I more or less know what we'll be getting. It's just an overly familiar format.

'Yutori desuga Nanika' – liked the first episode and this one actually has a stronger cast than 'Sleeper Hit', but haven't had time/ability to focus to watch more. (I feel too busy these days to I can't concentrate on dramas...)

Well, the busiest time of my year is finally over. Had my last day of classes yesterday and graduate next week :D . Now comes the dreaded process of having to look for a job. At least I'll have more time to watch stuff as well!

I'm still head over heels with Oh Hae Young Again. I'm also tentatively watching Beautiful Gong Shim and Dear My Friends. I'll need to see the next two episodes to decide if I'll stay with them. But for now they aren't a bad way to fill the weekend.

I've been trying to venture into t-dramas and c-dramas lately, but haven't been able to make it past the first episode of anything I've tried. The production value is either atrociously low or the acting over the top. My Amazing Boyfriend is an exception, and I know a lot of people here like it. But while I think the show is very cute, the story isn't interesting enough to motivate me to watch past episode 3.

Have you watched Murphy's law of love? It's just ridiculously cute, and it's the only t-drama I've managed to watch the entirety of for the same reasons. The music is too loud in the first ep, but it gets better after that. Although, if you need a stronger plot (really any plot at all) you'll have to look elsewhere in the t-c-drama world. Murphy's exists solely to satisfy my fluffy giggly feels.

Others have recommended to me: Love Now, Autumn's Concerto, Love Me if you Dare.

Weirdly, it feels like this thread is a day late. ~_^

Five kids continues to be my top fave out of all airing shows. I'm generally watching it raw Sat/Sun morning and then again later in the evening when the subs are near 100% done. Oh Hae Young Again is my close second. It's just such a warm and intriguing show with a real high quality feel to it.

Beautiful Gong Shim was a blast. I'm treating it as a goofy friend/comedy more than a romance. I like the cast and the wacky hijinks. Considering Namgoong Min did some appearances on Korea's version of SNL (including parodying his own character from Remember) I figured he's be pretty good with the comedy.

Mirror of the Witch has me intrigued. I'm definitely watching to see where it goes.

I'm also "something to watch watching" Monster, Neighborhood Lawyer, and T-dramas Refresh Man and Back to 1989. Well, Back to 1989 actually does have an interesting twist as its premise and what I suspected from the start of the series was confirmed recently. But the turns are very dark. I'm really not sure if the show can pull it off well.

Vampire Detective really was not holding my interest at all, despite having a bit of a crush on Lee Joon. So I've decided to wait until it's over and get a report as to how the series overall did and I might marathon it then.

Subtitles were lagging last week so I decided to rewatch Ep 3 of Healer. When the show was airing I re-watched early episodes multiple times to pick things up (my actual viewing pattern was like: 121234341234563456 at the start). So I just didn't feel I need to see the first 2 eps and all the flashbacks again and I remembered Bong Soo shows up in 3 so that's where I started. It was cool and I actually picked up foreshadowing and details I had not before. I was also reminded that Park Won Sang played the tabloid editor in that (he's currently the loan shark in Neighborhood Lawyer and also played Boxer Ahjussi in Last). What a character range that dude has!

I remember being super impressed when I came across Park Won-sang in Last after watching him in Healer. Very, very talented guy. They never met in that drama, but it was still a nice, surprising little reunion for me.

So SM's mom, dad, brother, and sister in law call her every day to see if she can send money to them or her brother is going to get hurt. You are just confused on the term oppa - it is I think refers to an older male person might be brother or someone close.

you mean the da-ge or---ge things? 个, it generally mean brother, so older brother again, kinda like oppa but both gender can used it,
in my understanding that just how people called each other,
Asian doesn't really used name but kinda like hierarchy,
people called you 2nd brother or big bro, of like the 3rd son/daugther
the same is happen to jie,

and the way it used for boyfriend is a form of affection, just like oppa but with named,
it's hard to find the counterpart in English, I don't think it need to be translated but to be understood on how to used it or replace it with names so English speaker can understand what it exactly mean

I hope this helps,

The Spanish or English equivalent would be calling a boyfriend papi/daddy. Except in the west that's a VERY sexy thing not an everyday sort of nickname. Maybe a closer example would be like how sometimes Black guys will call each other brother-- though I think that was more pronounced in the 70s/80s than it is currently. You still here the "help a brother out!" sometimes.

Corollary to this is that when guys call an older guy brother the word is hyung.

Oppa : term used to call older men by female,
so I find it used to every older guy that not too old (like someone that still can pass as your brother not uncle), even if it's not blood related

I find many Asian language doesn't called people by name, like everybody is an uncle/auntie , it doesn't have to be blood related,
I saw many people think everyone is related in Asian drama just because uncle and brother taken literally as blood related

@Oshi..Are you a bangladeshi?

But yes, I can confirm too, to this name-giving for all the people (blood or not). It gets really confusing for me, I end up calling the wrong people wrong things.

Some countries practice it more than others.

Where I live, you can call the elders uncle and aunties mostly. The same age group, brothers or sisters. Some even call husbands, brother (like oppa). And all the younger ones, you call younger brother/sister (like dongsaeng).

I believe each denotes a different level of familiarity between you and the person your speaking with. -ah denotes a closer relationship, whereas -ssi is for relationship that is less close, more formal.

This is what I remember hearing and reading before. I know others here, more well-versed on these matters can provide better details.

Am not a native korean speaker, nor do i think my explanation is clear. But based on my understanding, -ssi is used to address someone formally regardless of how familiar you are with that person. It can be used in different contexts - you can be familiar with a person and call them -ssi for the sake of formality (or maybe in a formal event/ public broadcast etc.) or you could call them -ah/-ya in a casual meet-up. Basically, -ssi is used when an event requires formality, or when you are unfamiliar with a person and unsure of what to refer him/her as.

As for -ah/-ya, it denotes a closer relationship between 2 individuals. The usage is more informal, and is most commonly used to address peers/ juniors in a more casual manner. -ah is used for names ending with a consonant sound, and -ya is used for names ending with a vowel sound. (Ex. If the name is Jong-woo, you add a -ya. If the name is Ye-jin, you add an -ah) This rule applies to both genders, and so there are no gender specifications.

I really hope this helps... hope I'm not too long-winded. Again, maybe someone more familiar with the language might be able to give a better explanation.

I think it is especially clear in a scene where a character changes from one to the other: the -ah version suddenly creates familiarity and establishes an emotional connection. There is a nice illustration in Healer ep 15, around 20 minutes in :-) .

Good morning!

Witch in the Mirror – Joon in lipstick, he wears it well. This is a really exciting fairytale story (Grimm in every way).
With the impending 17th birthday(s) of doom tomorrow, I think this song would make a great OST

THE BEATLES
"Birthday"
They say it's your birthday
It's my birthday too, yeah
They say it's your birthday
We're gonna have a good time
I'm glad it's your birthday
Happy birthday to you

I love Joon and Yeon Hee together – but her loved ones are in as much danger as she is. There is nothing better than a literal cliffhanger…

Not to mention Yoon Shi Yoon (Dong Gu) is the most optimistic and brilliant addition to 1N2D (never mind that table tennis isn’t his thing, give the guy a break!) He makes the penalties seem like little awards, he’s so darn adorabe~

Master God of Noodles – our original orphanage foursome – I’ve gotta say, if it wasn’t for bad luck they wouldn’t have any.

Lots of rain today. I snipped a cheerful garden rose, lupine, and purple chive flower bouquet from the yard today! April showers bring May flowers  Happy weekend, all \/

Ha, although neither song comes close to portraying the impending 17th birthday doom (although in true fairy tale fashion, I'm counting on the certainty of black magic curses being turned upside down). More like a bad parody, right?

Hi just dropping by quickly

going to a concert in support of the Archives of Folklore - can you believe an establishment preserving the roots of the nation doesnt even have a budjet? They only live from project funding.

Dear my friends looks promising. They are all very charismatic, these old dames

tried to continue Jackpot, but nothing new on that front... just beating up the same guy

FINALLY everything is planted in the garden. lots of manure went into that tomato bed...

I wish for a drama about the power big corporations have over our everyday choices and consumption. I mean the glyphosate thing and Monsanto and stuff. stop poisoning people already - I wish a drama would address that. Kind of a la Erin Brockowitch. companies forcing you to consume things that make you sick. as a keepr of a garden I want to destroy all poisoned food and all weed killers. No roundup!

so random.
anyway, greetings to all! take care!

Hi redfox!

Been meaning to say hi, as someone from the archives/museum world - absolutely I believe it about thier budget but it's still so shocking to me. Archives are SO IMPORTANT, they hold our history, they shape our current identity, they control powerful narratives.... I could go on and on. Really though, I really hope the concert is a big success and they raise a ton of money!!

Hopefully, they will get at least a permanent funding. it was established 1927 from the collections of one of the founding fathers of estonian identity and national spirit, the man who made us WANT our own country and culture - Jakob Hurt. and lead first by another - a collector and adapter of folk stories and the author of the first estonian science fiction, Matthias Eisen. They are both very important figures for me, who has long been fascinated by legends and stories.
you know, I almost feel ashamed having accepted a prize from the archives when they are so poor themselves! I should have given it back! I should have said, no thank you, just keep the money. I feel so dumb and selfish! (but then I wouldn´t have been able to pay for my trip to Hungary though...)

the actual notebooks of Jakob Hurt need conservation and digitalizing, they are in a dangerous shape right now, but some collections are available daily. The archives are in the city of Tartu though, not in Tallinn (and the concert was in Viljandi) but the distances are short and reachable most easily on a train.

I haven't been on here in ages, hope e retire is doing well. I'd love to know what shoes people are loving (or have loved in the past couple of months). I'm really looking forward to falling in love with a show. Some I'm trying (I'm behind on almost all of them):

Scarlet Heart (Chinese/Taiwanese): I wanted to try this since it did so well and I like a lot of the cast lined up for the Korean version. Anyone seen it? It's really visually beautifully! I'm only on episode 8 of 35 but there's already a lot going on. I also enjoy that there's no clear good-bad guy, each character is nuanced. On the other hand I don't really like either of the potential pairings *shrug*....I like the characters just nit he couples if that makes sense. Also, there's finally been s first kiss and it actually made be s bit angry. Otherwise though I like it and it's interesting to see the juxtaposition of ancient and modern thinking as well as catching flashes of ehatvtheseborunxrs futures hold since our heroine really knows her history.

God of Noodles: only halfway into episode two - at wont point did people get hooked? I saw a lot of people live this show on here. I think it's got s lot of potential but it's too early for me to know how I feel (also the first ep was mostly back story).

Jackpot - Anyone watching this? I'm behind, maybe episode 11. I didn't think I was that drawn to it but I keep going back for more. The maneuvering for once doesn't feel boring for me which happens a lot in sageuks.

Mirror of the Witch - I'm so excited YSY is back!! It's to early for much on this either since the tone hadn't stabilized. I like the playful parts a lot and the storyline could be good. I am one of those people bothers by the age gap though. And the chemistry for me with both leads is way more older brother than romantic to me and I can't imagine that'll change. I would love to see a kdrama where that kind of relationship was at the forefront though. You don't have to have a romantic connection to care about someone.

Scarlet Heart is one of my fave drama,
I really like the bond between the characther, the brothership, sistership, romance and how the character developed.
Ruoxi is still young and illiterate when she come to the past but she has wisdom from the future.
Forbidden city is complex era and I hope the K ver can make their ownversion that capture the history and the sentiment of C ver

Happy Friday, everyone! Finals started this week, and I walk next Friday! :) \./ :)

Watching:

Entertainer: I know I shouldn't worry about our boys singing next week with that article out, but I do!!! I'm so worried! Please love them like we do, public! And I think it's official: I really ship Min-joo with Yeon-soo. I want him to be happy. I want them all to be happy. Happy is good.

Mirror of the Witch: I'm excited for tonight, if it keeps up the vibe from the first and second episodes, I'm in for the long haul. Well, unless we spend another episode entirely devoted to making so-and-so sleep with them-or-the-other.

Beautiful Gong-shim: I liked it, but I don't know if I liked it enough to keep going. More thoughts on my blog, if you want them.

All About My Romance: Ha, in honor of the US political season this year I decided I should watch this one. So far, it's hilarious. I wish all politics ran like that (I really don't, please don't do that please please please). ;)

And finally, I can't believe I once really planned to watch all of GMB for Lee Jin-wook. I like him a lot, but... after the first few weeks of recaps I realized I shouldn't even start. Here's to hoping for a better summer season (W and Police Unit 38, I'm looking at you.)

Happy Friday! Still busy with keeping up with many dramas. Don't you think cinematography got much better in recent shows? (only if story-line can get better). Among my current favorites, there is 'Oh Hae-young Again'. They just had a press conference.[OSEN news, The fact]

Just OHY/Seo Hyun-Jin and Pretty OHY/Jun Hae-bin's responses:
Q: What do you think is the reason 'Dirt spoon'(vs silver spoon) Oh Hae-young is getting all these love?
A: SHJ: 'Just OHY' is an ordinary woman any women in 20, 30s can empathize. Gotten dumped, things going wrong, and even not being pretty- viewers feel sympathy looking OHY like that. I think the viewers think 'I wish things get better for her' so the big charm with OHY character is compassion. Actually I absorbed myself in the shooting so that I didn't have a chance to feel the popularity and love poured in. I am at a loss. Actually when a woman is by herself, she is not feminine at all. When I was playing OHY, I hoped people watched like watching a documentary or real variety problem. Also the reason this show is loved is because all the nice people with round heart are working together. I'd like to do better because we have full of nice people.

Q: Pretty OHY is unrealistic UmChinDdal(Ideal Mom's friend's daughter)?
A: JHB: Thus there are parts I feel burdened. I am also emotionally attached to 'dirt spoon OHY' When I read the scripts. I think pretty OHY is just symbolic character. Sometimes I see hateful comments about 'pretty OHY', and I hope people don't hate her too much. I try not to read comments, but I got to read comments like 'Seo Hyun-jin is much prettier than Jeon Hye-bin.' When there are negative comments about 'Pretty OHY', I have hard time. I am not prettier than Seo Hyun-jin ssi, but I make an effort to pretend to be pretty, and that is burden also. I should work hard without faltering. 'Pretty OHY' also has her own story/reasons which to be revealed, so don't hate her too much.

Q: If you pin point the charm of OHY each of you play?
A: SHJ: I feel sympathy when I look at 'Just OHY'. I think when an actress feels pity toward the character she plays, she truly understands the character. I also felt pity when I received the script- An ordinary woman, unlucky woman who got dumped right before the wedding, OHY with full of inferiority complex felt like I was looking at myself. Exposing the parts you don't have to reveal is OHY I portray and OHY the viewers watch.
JHB: I am playing 'Pretty OHY', but I am not that pretty which makes me very sad (what?). Even though I am not pretty, I pretend to be pretty. I was also engrossed in Seo Hyun-jin's character more. It is safe to think that 'Just OHY' is realistic character, and Pretty OHY is symbolic one.

Q:How is OHYA story will go from here?
A: SHJ: It will have faster moving plot than earlier episodes. I can't tell you the detail, but actors and staffs are working really hard on the set. Personally I am thankful thinking I met all these great people here. I feel pressure because I want to do well. Since I had fun reading scripts, I will try for the viewers to have fun watching also.
JHB: It is hard but I am working hard. I think if I keep working hard, the viewers will understand the sincerity.
I hope ratings go over 10%. I don't know if I can decide myself, but that happens, I'd like us to pick one person from the viewers and have her have one day date with Eric. She will be OHY for one day.(Eric said he'd think about it)

Others:
As the most relatable line, SHJ picked when OHY said to Park Do-kyung in Ep 3 "I don't want to be her. I am still feeling attached to myself and want to do well." About the comment that many viewers say SHJ actually resembles OHY, SHJ said, "OHY is the person who grew up being more loved than me. I grew up being loved, but I feel that OHY lives receiving so much love in every scene."

PD Park Jo-sik said about the show. "I am so thankful. The reason OHYA is loved is only possible because of lead actors/actresses and production team who are working hard quietly behind the scene." He said OHY he thought and OHY Seo Hyun-jin portrayed was different, but when they did the script reading, he thought SJH brand OHY was much better and his judgment was right. "Sometimes when I see actors I think their acting is matured, and currently SHJ is that case. I am satisfied and thankful to SHJ who expresses OHY's complicated emotion well."

Eric said he met an attractive character. "I just listened to writer-nim and production team and followed the script, still many people love me so I am thankful." He reads comments, "I actually read all the articles and comments about OHYA.. In the group chat we thought the show would do well, and I am glad the show is doing well. I agree with the response on the web when it said scripts, directing and acting are all balanced well together. I see everyone is doing his/her best."

Kim Jisuk said he expected a reward trip. "I've never had a reward trip for any drama I've ever done, but I was sure I could go on a reward trip with OHYA. When I did the (casting) meeting, I kind of joked I wanted to go on a reward trip, and I think I was cast because of that. There has been no Daebak project for me so far, but this time I have good feeling. I might have a reward trip for the first time since I've debuted." About his partner Ye Ji-won, "I shoot with Ye Ji-won sunbae most often and personally I think I am extremely lucky. YJW sunbae does acting which I can't tell if it is acting or real. For example, when she does the scene swinging the baseball bat, thought comes to mind is 'If I don't avoid now, I might die." Thanks to sunbae, settings on the set got smashed. But I learn a lot watching her acting attitude close by. Personally I am thankful."
About her Park Soo-kyung character, Ye Ji-won said "I am very satisfied with my character. Especially I am lucky to have a love line with Kim Ji-suk... If ratings go over 10%, I will re-create the scene SHJ ran to Eric to hug with KJS.. I feel like I got 15 years younger meeting this cool team of OHYA. I am so thankful and feel that I got much more love than I expected... It doesn't feel realistic and I will try hard. Biggest present is having romance with younger man Kim Ji-suk. Since it is dream of all women and I will make it coolest romance. I hope the viewers to look forward to it."

I like the actress Jun Hae-bin (too bad she feels hurt by comments). She debuted in Nonstop3 (2002). I first loved her in King and I. She was good in Queen Insoo too. And we might all remember she outdid the female lead(Nam Sang-mi) in Joseon Gunman (I was happy when there was rumor Lee Jun-gi and JHB dated after- it was just rumor?).
As for Ye Ji-won, I still remember her as Juliet from Juliet's Man(2000) with her partner Cha Tae-hyun. I am glad she still shines even for her supporting roles in dramas. OHYA fighting!

Hi, fan!

Thanks for translating the interview with the cast!

I think that Jun Hae-bin is doing a great job portraying NOHY as a character who seems to have it all but doesn't... Perhaps as her back story emerges, viewers will cut her some slack, although I have to admit that I feel more sympathetic towards OHY as Everywoman / underdog.

It sounds as if HJB really wanted the OHY role.

And as for being her on the receiving end of nasty comments: It's a good thing she isn't playing Evil Mom! Now that's a character who's turned into a lightning rod for loathing. ;-)

Re: Kim Jisuk's comments. I got such a kick out of watching him in CHUNO. His character here has some parallels. I wonder when he's going to start chopping firewood?! Only dream...

There was a press conference for DaeBak/Jackpot and Jang Geuk-suk and Yeo Jin-goo talked about the show [The fact, OSEN]
About shooting with Choi Min-soo(king Sukjong), Yeo Jin-goo said "I called him Hyung-nim when I worked on Warrior Baek Dong-soo, but now I call him Appa/dad and became closer. I am actually one year younger than Cho Min-soo sunbae-nim's oldest son. He really treats me comfortably like his son. Since we are father and son relation, I treat him as my father. He holds me well staying by my side. He gives advice like how I can be seen attractive. He is like pillar to me.. He comes to set with more research done on Yeonning gun(YJG plays) than me. He is a father who wakes me up every time."

About ratings, Yeo Jin-gu said "Jang Geun-suk hyung and I have similar thoughts. First, the title is Daebak, so it is true we had high expectation. If I say I am not disappointed about ratings, it will be a lie. But I didn't give up yet. All our staffs are shooting hard. It still has 8 more episodes left, and there will be countless number of incidents to happen so I trust many people will show interest in the later part of story. How Yeonning gun will change, how all these complicated relations will change will be points to watch."

Jang Geun-suk said "I also think so. If I have to add, I felt burdened wondering if I can express the responsibility contained by the two letter 'Dae bak'. The relation between actors and staffs and teamwork are really good. The working schedule is so tight that there is no time even for an outings/dinner out, but they still prepare well not to have any accident, and we could shoot feeling at ease. If there were only Yeo Jin-gu and me (young actors), we might get discouraged or faltered, but sunbae-nim are leading us, filling that empty spot. Yeo Jin-gu has worked for a long time, but we still think we are learning a lot. I think this is one of reason which makes me working hard.. Before I started this project, I felt weight, pressure and fluttering. This is the project I could grow up in my acting career, producing many scenes with all my body and soul strength as an actor. I was happy to bring all out without feeling lacking meeting Dae-gil character."

Yeo Jin-gu appreciates. "Since I have to work with sunbae-nim many times in Jackpot, they make me realize that this is important period for me. I think I do more than just shooting. I take directions from sunbae-nim and pd-min and learn know-how. This is Daebak project for me." Yet he felt uneasy acting facing great sunbae. "Since there were many scenes confronting sunbae-nim, I felt difficult mentally. I also had Goosebumps watching Choi Min-soo sunbae-nim's acting."

About the show, he said "(same time airing) three dramas all have own charms. It is hard to compare and I don't think our drama has less charm. I think the drama genre the viewers want to watch are all there. I think the strength of our drama is mental war. I think we will use mental war until the end. The story left in the later part will run to explode all the shooting done on the set so far, and it will have enough fun."
There was a scene which made the center of talk. About the scene Jang Geun-suk chewing the snake, he said "I expected I would have hard time and I heard enough explanation from writer-nim and I decided to follow no matter what. There were some difficult scenes and I started thinking if I really could do it. There hasn't been any project I worked this hard as I tried to best the scene engrossed like crazy. I think this is time I really had deep thought about the career of actor.. Eating the snake and stuff was not difficult. When there is red light on the camera, I feel pressured I have to express something. In salt field, I also chewed an live crab. After the shooting, when I thought about it, I felt like throwing up. I doubted they would do with real snake, but they brought in a real one. So we shoot with real snake. It tasted like shrimp? blue crab? snack. When I left after the shooting, I found there was some leftover in my mouth.

and Can we just not have female lead in the show? (we could have 2(or 4) male leads, and 3 second female leads :)

"I also had Goosebumps watching Choi Min-soo sunbae-nim’s acting.”

Choi Min-soo is amazing and I think it's hard for the writer to kill him off. I didn't think he'd last this long. As long as he is alive, the story will just circle around him.

I agree. This show could've done well without a female lead like "Deong Do Jeon."
Choi Min-soo, Jeon Kwang-Leol, Jang Keun-Suk, Yeo Jin-Goo are all solid and no strangers to sageuks.

I think Lady Seo could've had a better and more interesting story line than Dam-seo. Whatever romance the writer was going for is being halfass because they cast a weak actress who can't pull her own weight and her storyline is pretty uninteresting on top of that.

I am enjoying it a lot. It's pretty intriguing from a historical point of view and Sukjong has never been this real. All his sons are playing a role in this drama and it would've been great if they'd all gang up on Injwa.

I don't know if this Sukjong is closer to the real figure (than the one in Dong-yi or anyother -Damo, Queen Inhyun's man, Horse doctor, etc ), but he is much more interesting character here for sure. (Wiki) He was said he was kind when he was young but once he gets angry, he couldn't control his temper and sometimes took drastic measure.

He was a total fairytale in Dong Yi for a king who ordered the executions and exiles of over a thousand people imo. When it happened more than once then it's not a tantrum.
Choi Min Soo just comes off as more regal and real to me anyway.

0

Obviously he doesn't tolerate corruptions and will spare no one even his former queen. He is tough when he needs to be and soft when he needs to be.
I thought he was pretty genuine when he was consoling Lady Choi.

I was thinking about dropping Daebak somewhere around the 5-6 episode mark, but continued on and really like it now. Have only watched ep 1 on Mirror of the Witch, which was creepy and depressing, but I understand it gets brighter so will continue. Also watching "The Flower In Prison" which I enjoyed from the start.

In modern times, still loving Neighborhood Lawyer JDH. Also, Oh Hae Young Again. Trying Beautiful Gong Shim mostly because of On Joo Won; NGM has played so many baddies that his look still creeps me out!

Happy Friday!!

Haven't been on here in a while. Got too busy before vacay but I just recently got back from Seoul (I have been going yearly with friends) and decided to drop by and share my recent experience.

It was another memorable trip and this year, we decided to catch a glimpse of Park Bo Gum at the KBS building!! He was such a cutie, all smiles and waves and bows!!! Awwww! Glad we got to see him!! We missed Park Hae Jin by a day tho. He apparently had a fansign or an event in Myeongdong the day before we arrived. Looking forward to our next Korean adventure. Also, my kdrama loving friend and I went to some of the DotS filming sites such as the 3D0N restaurant and the bar where GooWon couple often had drinks. Funny thing was that the ahjumma who ran the place even played DotS OST for us while we drank dongdongju (rice wine) with pajeon haha! She was such a sweetie :D

Current dramas: watching and loving Oh Hae Young Again and Lawyer Jo. Excited to start Mirror of the Witch, Beautiful Gong Shim and Lucky Romance!!

Because I have soooo much time in my hands right now, I am watching a handful of ongoing kdramas and then marathon old ones.

Oh Haeyoung Again is on my top list, rn. Ugh. Seo Hyunjin is my girl since way back (so yeah also tried her older dramas like Feast of the Gods, Three Musketeers, Let's Eat 2) and I just can't help but like her so much more with her take on OHY. And what can I say about Eric that hasn't been said about him? Even his awkward expressions are amazing (although I prefer his Discovery of Romance hairstyle). I'd been looking forward to the drama since it was first announced and I can't get enough, I even started watching livestream!

I have tended to watch Goodbye, Mr. Black after (when I get busy and leave my dramas on queue) eventhough it lacked a lot. Maybe because it was ending sooner than the other ones, or maybe I got invested in Lee Jinwook, or maybe because it was supposed to be roughly based on The Count of Monte Cristo which I simply adore, I can't really explain.

Beautiful Gongshim! I found the first 2 episodes, which I marathoned, cute. I am looking forward to the next ones.

Entertainer. Dang! Minhyuk looks so good, I think I ogle him a lot while watching. I'm also very impressed with Ji Sung, and the band is just... Love.

Neighborhood Lawyer. I don't particularly love watching courtroom dramas (don't ask about Suits), but this drama has got me hooked! I like that I don't see a love line between Park Shinyang and Kang Sora, but I also like that they are showing us a rather beautiful, albeit bittersweet loveline between him and his wife. I hope it'll continue down that road.

Flower in Prison. Although I am not that particularly impressed with it now - Jung Dabin though was amazing, sad she had to grow up.

Re older ones that I also real-timed/marathoned:
Marriage Contract was Amazing.
Comeback, Mister was rather nice too! Although I am partial to Oh Yeonseo and Honey Lee rather than the male characters/actors.
It's Okay it's Love is also a favorite.
Oh My Ghost too. Ugh. Kim Seulgi. Love.
Ugly Alert. I marathoned this. All 133 episode.
My Daughter, Seoyoung, which I watched because of Park Haejon but ended up loving Lee Sangyoon even more.
Descendants of the Sun. Severe second couple syndrome, yoh.
Discovery of Romance. Again, Kim Seulgi. But also Eric. And it was reeeeeally fun too.
And. Master's Sun which I have on my iPad and rewatch whenever, especially while doing chores in no-internet zones in our house.

Yes!! On both accounts! But particularly on good acting. That's what I always look for in a good actor... if I look at them and think "Oh, it's ____ character again" or worse "Oh, it's 'actor's name'" in a show then there's something wrong. I need to get rid of the actor perception to fully enjoy the character.

I'm currently watching Another Oh Hae Young and i have fallen in love with Seo Hyun Jin

My Lawyer Mr. Jo is quite quirky a show. More of a Super Hero drama and I'm rooting of Soo Bin's parents to get back together from 1st few episodes.

Kang So Ra is now a side character and even Dae Soo + Ae Ra has more screen time.

My Daughater Seo Young I mentioned in previous Open thread but it appeared no one was interested in it. I have put it on hold for other Positive shows. 1st 12 Episodes in itself are enough to make you Emotional.

Marriage Contract's brief is put me off. But i want to watch it for UEE. I haven't seen any show of her after the Ojakyyo brothers.

Anyone watching POTATO STAR here?

Marriage Contract has some plotholes, but it's a heart-warming series. The female lead is pretty darn fab! Also, the show has the cutest child actor/character, i.e. UEE's daughter.

I was mostly following via recaps, and then I read about a super awesome kiss half-way through the series (not to be mistaken with a sh#@#y kiss attempt that happens later). After watching that scene about 50 times, I live-watched the rest of the show and caught up with the earlier epis too. The OTP's chemistry made news, and gets hotter by the end.

All this is to say that it's worth a watch!

My Mom is presently watching She Was Pretty. Me and my 2 sisters have already seen the drama shortly before and we just loved it! I just love Siwon's screamingly hilarious face expressions, dorkiness, and bluntly hilarious exclamations. I heard that he practices raising his eyebrows separately in the mirror, which explains why they are so mobile. :D. He's an awesome actor. I first saw him in King of Dramas and even though his character in there was funny in a similar way he makes every character in each drama different.

Just wondering: is She Was Pretty worth watching as a whole? I love goofy Siwon (a bit less enthusiastic about HJE's histrionics), but glancing at the recaps it looked like the story lost steam in the last few episodes; something about an early resolution and a lot of air time to fill towards the end. I hate second-lead heartbreak too... is it a drama you would recommend?

I watched both OMV & SWP and I realized I rated them the same haha. I think SWP was a bit better overall though. The main story for both were initially interesting, but they were wrapped up too early. The other/side stories after that were not captivating enough.

I loved the leads of OMV. They were super cute and had some funny, sweet moments. They were probably the main reason I kept watching the show.

I think SWP is also cute, but more funny (Siwon!+HJE!) and the side characters had more depth. The female leads had a good close friendship. Less angst in SWP too.

0

I would recommend it, it was light and warm with plenty of comedic moments, and held up pretty well as it neared the end, although the last episode was a bit lackluster. I understand why some might be annoyed with Hwang Jung-Eum's exaggerated acting, but I personally didn't mind it, it just made me grin. :D

Siwon is the 2nd lead, so you know how it would probably end... but there was nothing overly disappointing or dark with this drama, so there isn't really anything to fear. It's the type of drama that some people love and some don't, so I guess it depends on personal taste.

if only for Siwon and "Mamma MIA!" it is worth a watch.
I wish it had been a flat-out over-the top comedy, it would have worked better. I really hated Seo Joon being the cold prick. It doesn´t suit him one bit, it was so unnatural, and it made his turn into kindness even more unnatural. He should always play a warm character, some people arent fit for being nasty.

I watched it not long ago, and had the same reaction to his expressions. Actually, HYANGDAN was the first (mini) drama I saw him in, and I went bonkers over him -- enough to track down some of his earlier work. With my preference for sageuks, I watched A BATTLE OF WITS, and thought he did well and acted quite princely.

Dang... Fumble Finger!

SHE WAS PRETTY was my first case ever of Second Lead Syndrome... His trademark "Jackson!" and that towel scene still make me smile.

Overall, the show was fun when I didn't look too closely. It may have been one of the first modern Kdrama rom-coms I watched as I really like the historical genre more. But it was worth it to watch Shin-Hyuk's gyrations.

YES Siwon was hilarious in Hyangdan, too! We just loved his silly and romantic character there. It was fun and light with just 2 episodes, for people who are afraid to delve into a long drama.

I enjoyed She Was Pretty, but understand people who find Hwang Jung-Eum's character overly exaggerated. I'm the type who has fun watching those kinds of antics, though, so I didn't mind it.

This drama did do a good job of being fun, lighthearted, and not overly draggy near the end, though I didn't relish the rather lackluster last episode. It was a drama without many bad cons. I think it was solid and well-written throughout, with a warm story and some great comedy.

MILD SPOILER ALERT
Yes, I agree that it gets disappointing for him, because in the end he is the 2nd lead after all.
SPOILER END

Thanks to your rave reviews, I'm adding KING OF DRAMAS to my ever-lengthening to-watch list. I'm a sucker for drama-within-a-drama, but the big draw here is Siwon. For when I need an infusion of comedy, stat.

Perhaps the ending going haywire is part of the send-up of the business? From what little I've read of the industry, live shooting sounds brutal for all involved. All the other aspects of bringing a show into existence may be just as arduous. And the whole thing's a gamble to hit it big in the ratings. My guilty pleasure seems to be increasing its guilt quotient...

Thanks for the pointers to the OST. I just listened to "Tuesday" and "Blind for You." Nice.

Hi all:

God of Noodles: Seriously, this drama! Great moments of wonderfulness! And then the flaky-over-the-top melodramatic coincidences! I like it but the cruelty and bitterness is just relentless. Why would bad stuff be happening to everyone on the day Tae Un leaves prison?

As for the good parts: Love the alliances, friendships, etc. And the old school etiquette and hierarchy of the guys in prison just touches me so much! Poor folks are noble when they're powerless, but when they get rich, watch out! Yeo Kyung better not change.

And the subtext of folks taking responsibility for crimes, as if crimes and guilt are free-floating entities which are balanced out or can be taken, transferred, collectivized, put on one person, owed, re-purposed like a debt, or repackaged. Because it all comes out in the wash in the end. But it bothers me that this goes to the extreme of all the good people not sharing their pains with each other because they don't want to burden each other or they don't trust each other.

Am also loving the "who does one owe love to" stuff as well. But not as much as the other obligation ties. And of course, our Big Bad, is the only person who thinks of what he owes himself. "You only like to clean up your own hands." I feel so conflicted watching him because I actually got proud for him when he was writing out those invitations and so hurt for him when it turned out so badly. Curse you, humiliation! I'm also seriously loving the Big Bad's chief henchman, though. Not Uncle, but the other guy. Oori henchman serious wants that "obligation" cred to his evil hyung, and I worry what he'll do to get it, or what he'll do if he doesn't get it. He looked so hurt when he choked on his words, "Do you not trust me?" Love the sajeuk feel, as we try to topple Big Bad's kingdom and usurp the throne. Thought it'd be weird but it's working out well in that regard. Wondering if I should watch episode 8, though. Just so much overly-manufactured bad luck and sorrow in this thing.

Flower in Prison: This is so so good. I'm in for the long haul. I really don't know what's going to happen because we don't have an over-riding arch and really all that's going on seems so backward: hiding a past secret. We don't see much of what would thrust the plot forward. But I trust this writer, for some reason. I guess because the heroine is so perfect. Badass but human.

Loving Mirror of the Witch but -- am I bad?-- I would've loved it if our princess had really died. A love story between a ghost and a regular guy would be sooo good.

Beautiful Gong Shim: I like this a lot but (yeah, I seem to have a lot of trigger warning flares of late) I have to get over my weirdness about lost/kidnapped/stolen children. Love the friendship between the two cousins, though.

Have a great weekend, all.

@ Mirror of the Witch, you're not bad at all... but even the mention of it has my heart hurting! Ah, they could never be together! Ah that would be so sad! (I'm wondering how I will survive Bring it on, Ghost as I write this).

"But it bothers me that this goes to the extreme of all the good people not sharing their pains with each other because they don’t want to burden each other or they don’t trust each other."

This, though. So true, just from a human standpoint. I and friends have thought like that sometimes, and it hurts so much to be on the other side. I've come to see it almost like another form of selfishness--they're not being a burden, they're being loved. It doesn't hurt to help those you love.

Flower In Prison was good until the age jump. Too bad the young actress , Jung Da-Bin, is only 16, I enjoyed her acting and wouldn't have minded her doing the whole show.

Watched Mirror of the Witch but didn't connect.

Hello beanies :)

I wonder why Dramabeans is not recapping Master- God of Noodles? It is beyond awesome! I feel as if I am watching a movie as the cinematography is breath-taking. Its a revenge drama perfectly done. And every episode ends with such a cliffhanger that I almost feel that I will die if I don't watch what will happen next. I haven't felt this strongly for a show since I Remember You.

And the actors- they are amazing! Cho Jae Hyun has perfected playing the role of villain so much that I would be scared of him if I ever see him. Though the thing is, he had already perfected his villainous acting skills in Punch. And while I do love all the lead actors, I really am loving Lee Sang Yeob. He was creepy personified in the 2 or 3 episodes of Signal as the crazy serial killer, but he is basically stealing the show here. *SPOILERS* The scene where he comes out of the jail, and doesn't find any of his friends waiting for him. His acting really made me cry. And basically all the acting he did was with his eyes. But oh man- so so good! *END OF SPOILER*

Yes, there are many coincidences, but we don't really watch a drama for it's realism (much). And the coincidences are actually giving many inter- connected layers to the story which I am really loving.

I am also watching:
Oh Hae Young Again- I love this drama. Our OHY is so relatable. Its like I am watching myself in action.

Entertainer- This show could have been awesome. It really could have been. But it feels like I am watching a bad directorial job. The different scenes don't seem to connect well. Basically there is lack of a coherent flow. And I never understood why kdrama fans hated Hyeri because I really loved her in AM1988, but I can now understand what they meant about her acting. She is quite irritating. I am still gonna watch it for Ji Sung and Ha Neul.

Looking forward to Lucky Romance, Police Unit 38, W, and Doctors.

I'm BAAACK!

Sorry I missed you as OT #447 Take One waned last week. After your final post back there, I stashed a couple more comments at the end of OT #447 Take Two.

Are you still game to pick up where we left off discussing SUNNY? I even rewatched it early this morning to warm up. ;-)

Letting SUNNY marinate for a spell and then watching it again had an unexpected payoff. "Touch by Touch" has been playing in the back of my mind all week. So addictive, that earworm!

Anyway, when I watched the riot scene in the wee hours this morning, the timing of the lyrics to the fisticuffs jumped out at me in a way that flew right past me the first two times around. The happy accordion-ish disco-polka playing during a riot... totally surreal.

Hello PakalanaPikake!

You know what, I've been waiting for the OT all week because I wanted to know how you feel about it. I actually checked last week's OT Part 2, but I forgot page 2 of the comments get truncated on mobile! So I missed it. Ah I'm listening to Touch By Touch now! It's a rainy day today and I feel like watching Sunny again.

I was only introduced to the idea of feminism after I entered an all-girls secondary school. I didn't realise how deeply ingrained sexism was in our society (and how I've internalised it) until my friends kept reminding me about it. I got frequently whacked on the head when I said things like 'the greatest success of a woman is to get married and be a good mother' or 'A girl shouldn't do that [insert a stereotypical 'male' activity]'. I cringe when I look back at those beliefs I held. I met two of the strongest, toughest girls in secondary school, and they were the ones who supported and encouraged me when I was weak/insecure. Sadly, when all of us went on to a co-ed junior college (equivalent to high school? Pre-u? I'm not sure what's the US equivalent), we were branded as 'argumentative' because we were always calling people out on their sexism. Lol. 'Girls shouldn't be so argumentative. That's not attractive.' -Rolls eyes-

Sigh that's why I love Chun-hwa so much. My favourite scene was when Chun-hwa-the-VCR told future Chun-hwa that she's doing well in a male-dominated world. Damn I tear a little just thinking about the VCR scene.

Aloha, Kaylie!

As I start to write this, it's just past midnight (Sat., 5/21) in New Jersey. I just took another look and found your post. Yay!

When you looked for my reply on OT 447-Take2 last week, I hadn't yet posted on page 2, so you didn't miss anything. I was still on Take 1 (get a gander there just in case). I went ahead and posted while my thoughts were still fresh. We were ships passing in the night. But that's okay. We can catch up over here. I just hope the wait was worth it! ;-)

Just started up "Touch by Touch" for a little mood music. -- Oops, that ended. Now for Daniel Kobialka's Pachelbel Kanon in D, which I've linked up above in a post on THE CLASSIC. Very soothing, and heartbreakingly sweet.

Before I forget: I have a question about SUNNY. Was everyone in the group expelled? It wasn't clear to me what exactly happened after "the incident." I'm wondering if the subtitles are to blame. It's murky.

Re: junior college. Here in the US, it's the first two years of college, and leads to an "associate degree" in arts (AA) or sciences (AS). Typically you'd then transfer to a four-year school to earn your bachelor degree. AAS = associate in applied science, and is a technical degree, for example, in automotive technology. Junior colleges offer non-degree certificates, continuing education programs for professionals, and credit-free adult school enrichment classes as well.

Lest this get too long, I'm going to break this post into two. Sorry to take so long to wrangle this into words. I'm remembering stuff I haven't thought of in a while.

Yoo hoo, Kaylie...

Back to SUNNY and feminism after taking Magma for a spin.

Might I ask where you're from? I'm not trying to pry, just seeking to find common ground. ;-)

In secondary school, were you encouraged to think for yourself, and to question the status quo? Was thinking outside the box acceptable, or was rote learning the way to succeed academically? Were you treated differently by teachers and faculty in the segregated environment compared to co-ed elementary school? In your society at large, what is the status of women? And what are your family's attitudes? -- All of these factors come into play when I think about becoming aware of the ways in which the game is rigged.

I went to Catholic school from kindergarten through junior high. In 7th or 8th grade we were told in religion class one day that if a pregnant woman had complications, the baby's life should be saved in preference to the mother's. What that said to me was: Your life is worth nothing because you are female. It came as a terrible shock that set off about 15 years of spiritual anguish until I finally threw in the towel and voted with my feet.

[It wasn't until years later that I learned that one of my great-grandmothers died in childbirth. I have a gut feeling that I already knew that at the cellular level.]

This revelation opened my eyes to the patriarchal nature of the institutional church. It also made me acutely aware of the difference between religion and spirituality. And it turned me into a conscientious objector. I knew darned well that such thinking would have gotten me burned at the stake in earlier times. Knowing the way I think, I have a feeling that it happened more than once.

I must add that this episode occurred at a time when the national debate over access to abortion was heating up in the US. Around that time, Kate Millett's Sexual Politics was published. As was a radical new "owner's manual" written by and for women, Our Bodies, Our Selves. Both are major whacks on the side of the head...

My internet connection was whack-o a day or two ago. Rebooting the routers and clearing my cache eventually worked. I think. Maybe it was just a passing disturbance in the Force.

I'll keep checking back. If all else fails, try posting at the end of this thread. I'll look there. One way or another, we will discuss SUNNY!

Daebak! Yes! That's it!!!

Did you hear it all the way through? At 4:00 it turns into a delicious and unexpected slow blues! I love it!!

Cho-kuna!

YouTube has another clip by these guys. Alas, in mono, and overmodulated. Even so, totally kickass! This power trio pinned the meters. -- They're dressed just like the New Wave bands in NJ at that time. Cool!

Oh, man... just found a studio recording of the above. Excellent!! I definitely would have played this on the air if I'd known it existed back then.

Again, thanks for finding these guys for me. I'd never heard of SoundHound before... very cool!

SoundHound's a really useful app! I'm always using it to identify songs in dramas and on the radio. Wish smartphones existed earlier. I watched a really good Hong Kong drama when I was really young and got a song in the drama stuck in my head for many years. Took me ten years to finally discover it's Big Big World by Emilia Rydberg. Thanks to the Internet and technology!

Hi Beanies :) !

It's been a long time since my last post and some changes, things happened.

I finished DOTS, well it was nice to my eyes due to SJK and other run scenes ;) , the plot was lacking , but I managed to enjoy it quite well with my brain turned off.

And then I ddl all Six Flying Dragons episodes, put them on my cellphone , and God knows that was one of the best ideas of the year ! My one-hour commutes (sometimes 20 min more) to go to work were nicely changed !
I understand now all the praise SFD received on dramabeans.
I was hooked right away, and every single episode was good, which is remarkable for a 50-episode sageuk .
I can only compare it to Jumong which I watched 3 years ago and enjoyed a lot.
Many scenes were breathtaking like when Boon-Yi exchanged the secret code with Moomyung, or when she rescued Bang won, or when finally we got Moo-Hyul presentation as the sixth dragon.
Of course without forgetting to mention all actors performance and in particular Yoo Ah In who impressed me.
After finishing SFD, the solution to fight withdrawal syndrome was to watch another stunning drama. That's how I ddl all Signal episodes. I just finished it 30 minutes ago, and ohhhhhhh that was so good . It's difficult to have consistency when dealing with time paradox serie, but even with that difficulty Signal was oh so good , it reminded me of 9, nine times traveler ( <3 ).

Besides that , I continued to watch reality shows
- Running man (DOTS special was so good, now I finished Signal I will watch Park Hae Young again ;) ,
- Infinity challenge : did not watch Sechs Kiss yet, the Wedding song is so fun with Jang Beom June love his honesty ,
- 1n2d : Yoon Shi Yoon is such a good addition to the team, loved the episodes so far :) ! and the ping pong part with Kim Jun Ho was mean but still fun , sorry not sorry

And last but not least : Oh Hae Young again is such a delight , I enjoy it so far , the "pretty" Hae Young annoys me, and I fear a little when "our" Hae Young will found out the truth about Do Kyung and why she didn't marry her fiancé .
Also I am waiting for Lucky romance and Hwang Jung eum return (I loved her in Kill me Heal me and in She was pretty) so waiting for a good rom com :) .
This post is quite long , that's little compared to how much I enjoyed SFD and Signal !!! See ya :)

Hi, Kudo ran...

Thanks for your comments on SFD and JUMONG... which I have on my list after watching the first episode a couple of months back. So many sageuks, so little time, especially after getting pulled into some modern dramas.

Since a lengthy drama doesn't seem to faze you, your long commute might be more enjoyable in the company of THE KING'S DAUGHTER, SU BAEK-HYANG. The episodes are about half an hour, and there's 108 of them.

The title character is played by Seo Hyun-Jin, which is why I'm now watching ANOTHER MISS OH.

Happy trails!

@PakalanaPikake thanks for the tip , I will try to ddl them and watch one or two eps this week-end to see if it will be worth the journey :) , but 108 episodes is quite long o_O !
So far I only watched 2 long sageuk SFD and Jumong, I watched others like 24 ep length , I just love traditional instrument of sageuk OST and beautiful hanboks :) !
As you said "So many sageuks, so little time" , it's just so many drama (modern and sageuk) and so little time -_- , but still a pleasure to watch hahaha :)

Aloha, Kundo ran...

The cinematography is gorgeous, the OST memorable, entire cast is pitch perfect... and the hanbok and sets are out of this world. Luscious is the word that comes to mind. Plus 4-5 romances, espionage, battles royal, conspiracy, ethereal dancing, and good old-fashioned bromance. And excellent comic relief.

After an opening riddle, it flashes back to the parents' adulthood, then birth of the protagonist -- who rapidly grows into a teenager, which is when things get interesting. Do give it a try... at least two episodes, since they're so short.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. ;-)

Hi Kudo ran!

SFD was so good! You're right! The way to fight SFD withdrawals is to watch an equally stunning drama which is Signal. After finishing those two dramas I feel like nothing else interests me anymore. Next drama with an interesting concept to look forward to - W. Parallel universe. Finally something that sounds exciting after Signal!

Hi Beanies,
I haven't been around much lately. I got burned out on dramas after DotS (worked on it). I know a lot of people LOVED it, but I thought it was just mediocre.

Thank goodness for Five Children. I am thoroughly enjoying the stories. I like the OTP and the Golf couple, of course, but the other characters are growing too. The in-laws are hilarious. So well acted. I was thinking about who the "five children" are. Of course, OTP's hers and his, but also, there are five children of all the adult couples. And if you don't count adulterous woman and her mother, there are five adults (well, they aren't really adults are they?). I am looking forward to the coming weeks of improving relationships and discoveries of the intertwining relationships.

Just started Master: God of Noodles. Really dark revenge drama. We'll see if I can stand it. I hope so because I love the cast.

I did watch Dramaworld. It was simply inane. And the only actor who stayed in character was the woman who played Claire. I'd like to see her do more because I thought she had some comedic ability.

Happy Friday Beanies! ^^

I've currently been waiting for my chinese takeout order to arrive for, oh... 1½ hour? NOT happy lol!

Revenge is a dish best served cold, but noodles are best served warm. (My visiting mom of course didn't understand why I laughed so much after I said that. God of Noodle is apparently not on my mom's radar. Or any kdrama for that matter. Not to mention how bad my non-joke actually was.)

Drama-wise I FINALLY finished Heartstrings, yay! I had to skip through some of the final episodes, but Minhyuk was cute and acted well throughout though (: Between this and Entertainer, I'm starting to like his acting.

Following Entertainer and have started to absolutely love it, despite it's flaws. Tried to watch Oh Hae Young Again and the new one with Namgoong Min, but not really feeling the cinematography or tone of either right now, so they're off the table for now.

LOVED YSY in 2d1n!!! Gaaaahhh, perfect dynamic so far, can't wait for the next episode :) I love how they completely hazed him and even when he knew he just went along lol ^^ He brings a different kind of energy and personality that really adds to the show and it's nice to have one more younger guy as well.

And then in the comments some people asked if it was a real Kpop debut and my laughter reached the dangerous heights of that of Monty Python's Deadly Joke sketch ha!

In case you're curious, the lyrics include gold nuggets such as:
"My back is itchy", "Open the refridgerator", "I have no friends" and "The sun is really far away". Such depth lol.

Yo, up here... ran out of nested links.

Apropos of grey-filtered Danish cinema: I loved the Swedish production of WALLANDER. I first watched the British version, and found that hearing the original language gave a different feel... which I preferred. It was cool to hear Swedish spoken because of its cognates with German. The "music" (lilt) is quite different.

Required fields are marked *

Oh, are you German? ^^

I'm "supposed to" understand Swedish, but the melody of the language is completely different from my native languages. That all Scandinavians understand each other is such a myth lol! It's odd though, because I speak several languages and am even learning two more atm, but Swedish? Just. Don't. Get. It.
Maybe it's because it's so close to Danish, yet pronunciation-wise so different? Reading it usually isn't the problem, but when spoken I'm as lost as if it was Swahili lol!

I tend not to watch Scandinavian cinema anymore, it's all so sad and hopeless ha. But I agree, it's usually better to watch something in the original version. The worst thing is when they don't just make a remake, but dub it instead. I think I might be allergic to that after watching Jack Sparrow and Neal Caffrey speaking German *shudders* How anyone can watch that sober and not cringe 99.9% of the time is beyond me lol!

Aloha, Kaybee!

Paka is just fine -- and a lot better than PP! Just don't call me Baka (verrueckt auf japonisch)!

Nee, I'm Irish-American, with a few Scots on the side, and English by way of Virginia. Go far enough up the family tree and there be Normans and other viking ancestors. Gramps and my blond baby brother (both 6-footers) look/ed like they just got off a longship.

German is my second language, which I fell in love with as a kid when my dad played Marlene Dietrich records. I studied in Hamburg after graduation, and felt right at home there. My other major was English Literature, and hearing Plattdeutsch reminded me of Chaucer. Listening to a guy hawking bananas in Platt at the Fischmarkt on a Sunday morning was wild. As was Torfrock!!

I came home via Copenhagen and went bonkers when I heard Danish spoken. I felt like I was supposed to be able to understand it, but could only pick out the occasional word. Recently I heard Norwegian being spoken, and could grasp the phonemes and cognates pretty well. In my translating work, I sometimes encountered sources in Dutch, and that gave me headaches. The lilt of Swedish just throws me for a loop. Speaking of which:

1941 HITS ARCHIVE: The Hut-Sut Song - Horace Heidt (Donna & her Don Juans, vocal)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KB38A0WKPaQ

That's what you get for putting that meme of Jack Sparrow speaking German in my head. Give me subtitles or give me death! No dubbing! Aish!! ;-)

WALLANDER may have filled my lifetime quota of darkness with a side of depression... but it was well done.

What was way more fun was an alternate history / fantasy trilogy, the first book of which is The Hammer and the Cross, by the sci-fi writer Harry Harrison and John Holm aka Tom Shippey, JRR Tolkien scholar. It really hit home, especially after reading Marian Zimmer Bradley's The Mists of Avalon.

The protagonist is a Briton slave apprenticed to a viking smith. Having taken metal shop in high school, I enjoyed reading about sword making and other metallurgical processes. When I was a kid, I read a lot of mythology and folk lore, so the spirituality was very interesting. Eventually the action moves to Norway, through the Black Sea, across the Mediterranean to Cathar country... I couldn't put it down.

Ha! Will steer clear of Baka then ;)

I love Hamburg, I actually spent countless vacations there and it just always feels like coming home. Even if my German isn't as good as it should be, considering that I'm actually supposed to be bilingual *hides head in shame*
Plattdeutsh is hilarious. Seeing how Old English is after all heavily influenced by German (and old Danish/Norse), Chaucer's Middle English is actually, probably, easier to read if you know those two languages as well English. I always find him a delight and really, modern translations are just not the same!

Ah yeah, the good ole Danish language. If you're not born here, mastering it is supposedly nigh impossible lol. And while it's got some roots in common with German and actually contributed a lot of words to the English language, you really can't understand a thing if you've never learnt it. It makes sense that you could understand Norwegian much better. Danish pronunciation is known for being weird and not really corresponding with how it's written. (It's also a pretty un-pretty language ha, but don't tell anyone I said that ;))

Fluency in German, Danish and English combined will make Dutch fairly easy to at least read. Most Danes who know both English and German (at least to the extent we're taught in school) can read and understand a little of it, at least enough to get words and grasp meanings here and there. It seems to consists of a healthy mix of the three languages.

Ha, the song! Knew it already, but not the lyrics. And yes, subtitles for the win! They also have the added advantage of slowly letting you learn some of the original language without even trying. The amount of Korean I've learnt since I started watching kdramas only 6 months ago might not be to the extent of letting me understand long conversations, but I keep surprising myself with how much I actually get. I'm forever thankful for all the amazing volunteer subbers and seggers out there :)

Fantasy books are the best. And we never get to read stuff like that for my college classes, 'cause it's Comp Lit and Fantasy isn't serious enough *sniffles* Same goes for Sci-Fi, which is just absurd.. Ack, the pride and prejudice of literary snobs...

Re: OT-446, “500 Miles”

While listening to "Time after Time" from the SUNNY OST, I came across a version performed live by the song's coauthor, Rob Hyman. He and other members of The Hooters played on Cyndi Lauper's original recording.

Was surprised to read last night that Peter, Paul and Mary sing backing vocals on The Hooters’ version of “500 Miles.” You can hear them starting at the 1:58 minute mark.

NB: Hooter has nothing to do with female anatomy or a restaurant chain. It refers to the melodica that gave the band its trademark New Wave sound. These guys from Philly have been rocking since 1980, and will tour extensively in Germany, Switzerland, and Scandinavia this summer. ;-)

I remember how much you like "500 Miles." It made an impression on me.

It's not every day that a ska-inflected update of a venerable railroading song drops into my lap. The cherry on top was that The Hooters had PP&M backing them on it. I didn't hear this version until recently, and 1989 feels like so long ago. The world has changed in unimaginable ways since the song was first written.

Just now I finally listened to the original version:

Yoo hoo, Kaybee!

I'm over here... These nested links are getting ridiculous.

Ah, Hamburg. A great city to walk in. I loved riding the streetcars, which reminded me of Boston's. I was there when they were taken out of service in November, 1978, IIRC. Used to ride the line that terminated in Schnelsen as my guest family (unni, actually) lived in Hamburg 13 near Beim Schlump, Sternschanzenpark and Rotherbaumchausee.

It's still a bit too cool and overcast here today for an Alsterwasser, but I wouldn't turn one down. ;-)

Re: English and its Germanic/Scandinavian parents

I didn't realize that Danish is such a challenge for non-natives to learn. Especially the pronunciation. (Don't worry -- my lips are sealed!) I feel a lot better knowing that. Thanks!

I attended a two-year community college after high school to get the basic classes out of the way and save a bundle of money. For my last two years, I transferred to a school that offered a German translating major. The only classes I took then were in my two majors: translating and English literature. (They offered Swedish as well, but I couldn't have graduated on time if I took that, too.) One day in Shakespeare class, I had a sudden revelation: the Bard's sentence structure placed the verb at the end of the clause, just like in German. I nearly fell out of my chair. I figured that the further back in time you go, the closer you get to the Germanic roots of the language. I was practically jumping up and down.

It's been a dog's age since I last looked at Chaucer (or Willy the Shake, for that matter). One of the things that made them easier to understand was reading them aloud, using German pronunciation.

Alas, my German has gone to Hades in a handbasket. Use it or lose it. As a translator, it was always easier for me to read German than speak it. Which was why I went to Hamburg for a work-study semester after graduating from college. Total immersion and classes resulted in my waking up one day about six weeks after I arrived and suddenly being able to speak -- and understand. Listening to NDR2 and watching TV really helped with my listening comprehension. I knew I was making progress when I realized that I was dreaming in German!

Glad you got a kick out of Hut-Sut. It's truly amazing what one can find these days on the internet, especially on YouTube. ;-)

Re: sci-fi: Robert Heinlein is probably my favorite, and greatly influenced my thinking. He's utterly subversive, and a feminist to boot: Time Enough for Love, Stranger in a Strange Land, and I Will Fear No Evil. Vernor Vinge's True Names... and Other Dangers and A Fire upon the Deep. H.P. Lovecraft (brrrr!). Lord Dunsany's exquisite fantasies in The Book of Wonder. Also, The Mote in God's Eye by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle. Arthur C. Clarke's "The Nine Billion Names of God."

Re: Kdramas and learning Korean

I think I saw my first Korean shows in 2013 (DR. JIN and SU BAEK-HYANG). After a lengthy break, I went back to watching. I got more systematic about it late last summer and started keeping a log, and really went off the deep end with marathoning.

I discovered I like listening to the language, and that what is said often differs from the person's name, which got me researching. I feel at a disadvantage when hanja and hangeul are shown onscreen because I suspect I'm missing exposition (e.g., signage, official proclamations, wanted posters, ransom notes, Lee Seo-Rim's diary in ARANG AND THE MAGISTRATE).

Can this old dog learn some new tricks that will enhance her enjoyment of Kdramas and appreciation for Korean culture? To that end I found a dandy article by Odessa Jones, and hope to at least teach myself to read hangeul. She has a lot of nifty methods, along with suggestions for books and apps, etc.

http://www.koreandrama.today/watch/how-to-learn-korean-from-k-dramas-kill-me-heal-me-edition/

There's a part 2. If you search for learning Korean on the site, it should pop up.

Around the first of the year Ms. Jones moved to Korea to teach English. I like her writing, and enjoy her comments on Kdramas, culture, etc. I hope the article is helpful to you. ;-)

Better sign off. It's 3AM here in Jersey. -- Tschuess!

The streetcars are way before my time, haha. It really is the perfect city for walks. Walking by die Elbe is one of my favorite things when there and it always reminds of my childhood. Their many bookstores with tons of English books (pretty much the only language I read in and both hard to get by and expensive here) is another favorite of mine. I tend to spend hours just browsing whenever I'm there and always come home with enough books to fill a suitcase. Oops?

Yeah, no need to feel down about not getting Danish! Lots of people who've lived here forever still have a hard time and with something like 'en' or 'et' ('a' or 'an') being something that probably gets messed up the most. There are literally NO rules for when it's the one or then other, you just have to know it. For every. single. noun. out there. So yeah... It's a complicated language :)

We read some of Beowulf in the original for a class and I was so astonished that I found it much easier than expected. When words like 'askes' ('ashes') are borrowed from the Danish 'aske', it suddenly becomes a fun game, trying to spot the Danish and German inspiration. I always read both Shakey and Chaucer aloud, it really does help so much!

After about three days in Germany I always start to get much more fluent again, but on any ordinary day my pronunciation will be nigh perfect, my reading and understanding pretty good and my vocabulary in a conversation close to nill LOL. My mind tends to suddenly forget a ton of words and all the grammar when I have to speak it *sigh*

I haven't read any Heinlein yet. I love old lit, so one of my faves in that genre is Jules Verne. And I recently found out that only ONE other person in my class knew who he was. Yikes! He's preeeetty famous, so for almost an entire comp lit French class not to know him is seriously embarrassing *shakes head* What did these people read when they were kids??

Thanks for the link! I recently stumbled across that site, but hadn't seen that post. It's got some pretty good tips it seems :) Would love to get my hands on that practice/grammar book one day!

One of the first things I did was actually to research hangul a little and after looking at it for some minutes every now and then, I know it well enough to understand names and the few words I know. Sometimes I'm also able to sound out words I don't know. I recently surprised myself by actually being able to read a word here and there when captions come on screen, despite the short time they appear for - manse! ^^ The double vowels I haven't gotten the hang of yet though and for a few of the letters I'm still missing one of it's alternate sounds. But it's true when everyone says that their alphabet is fairly easy to learn. A lot of it is so extremely logical and systematical. And it's such a beautiful one that it's nice to look at while learning, at least that's what my mathematically inclined brain makes me think ;)

Aloha, Kaybee!

Glad you found me down here. ;-)

I enjoyed looking around by Landungsbruecke... and the view across the river to the Blohm u. Voss shipyard with the gantries outlined against the sky and seagulls screaming... It reminded me of the Maersk containership terminal alongside Newark Airport and the one in Boston Harbor.

One day I decided to take in the view from Michel, but being a cheapskate student, I took the stairs instead of the elevator. Auwe! It wasn't bad on the way up, although it took a while and tired me out -- but the exercise was good. The view was terrific as the afternoon sky was pretty clear. It was the trek down the stairs that nearly triggered a panic attack, and it wasn't just because of my wobbly, exhausted knees.

On the way up, if you look straight ahead of you, all you see is stairs. If you look out to the side, you see the vast emptiness of the tower, which didn't bother me. It was like being inside the dirigible hangar at Lakehurst Naval Air Station (when the Hindenburg exploded). On the way down, however, you are facing out and down into the abyss, and that terrified me. I gained new understanding of my mother's fear of heights when climbing stairs without risers (you can see through them). I was by myself, so soldiered on, but my knees were kaputt from braking all the way, and I was a nervous wreck. I can laugh about it now, but at the time it was schrecklich. Definitely memorable. I didn't learn my lesson, either, and have since climbed the Statue of Liberty and the batteries on the rim of Diamond Head.

Our classes were held on Moorweidenstr. at the edge of the Uni campus, so I often walked over on Beim Schlump and down to campus via Grindelallee, or to Schlump or Sternschanze and hopped a train to Dammtor and hoofed it from there. Later in the semester, my translating internship was at a paper machinery factory up near Eppendorfer Muehlenteich. The company had a deal with an nearby old folks' home to make lunch available to employees, so I ate there. The food was gutes, buergerliches Essen... but I could not handle the Labskaus! Auwe!

I just remembered having to register for my legal alien status at the government offices on Grindelberg. My first encounter with a Paternoster. Scared the hell out of me! OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) would have banned the things here. On the other hand, there was a certain charm to them. You just had to have good timing.

I know what you mean about books. They are my great weakness, too. Your reading habit is positively aerobic! What I really loaded up on in Hamburg was music. Heard the Nina Hagen Band at the Markthalle, and also Devo. Devo's was one of the weirdest shows I've ever seen, but the locals seemed to love them. That was back when they were in their flowerpot phase. Nina Hagen was out of this world -- gad, what a voice, and her first band was totally badass. Concert memories didn't weigh anything, but I...

Concert memories didn't weigh anything, but I bought a suitcase full of vinyl for my radio show. Felt like a pack mule. Luckily was able to check my bag at the Bahnhof near Tivoli when I arrived in Copenhagen for an overnight visit with a college classmate's parents in the foreign service. They lived in Gentofte. I don't remember much aside from being acutely aware that I was totally illiterate and unable to speak with the locals. And having a nice visit, of course! Then I flew home, with a couple days' sojourn in Dublin.

Re: indeterminate articles in Danish. Auwe! I would just shoot myself and get it over with. ;-) It sounds even worse than the two additional cases in Russian that kept me studying German... What a great shibboleth. Must have come in handy during the Cold War (for ferreting out spies).

Ah, yes, Beowulf. Is that ever a blast from the past! I bet if I were to take a stab at it today I'd spot more cognates. When I was in school, John Gardner retold the self-titled story from Grendel's point of view. I don't recall the details now, but know that I read it.

Have you read "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight?" I bet you'd get a kick out of it.

About those head crashes when speaking German. I know them only too well. I recently tuned in to NDR to watch some TV programs. Was looking for one with closed captions to help jump-start my listening comprension... but it interfered with my Kdrama viewing, and I have to sheepishly admit that I've abanadoned that strategy for the nonce.

I hate to admit it, but I don't think I've read Jules Verne myself. *hangs head in shame* But I so know who he is. When I was younger, I wasn't into sci-fi. I was a horse nut, and read lots of books about them, including Black Beauty. I also read all of Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories at least twice, with some G.K. Chesterton Father Brown mysteries and Agatha Christie, too. I loved Walter Brooks's series of Freddy the Pig juvenile stories, and Edward Eager's delightful series of fantasy books that started with Half Magic. Somehow I discovered Isaac Asimov's Lucky Starr series, and that got me into sci-fi. Much later, a friend who was studying to be an elementary teacher turned me on to A Wrinkle in Time, which I loved. Later I grooved to Kurt Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle, with its ice-nine, karasses and granfalloons. Gad, I haven't thought of those terms in years. Methinks DramaBeans, for some of us, may just be a karass. ;-)

Uff da! -- continued --

As for Heinlein, his use of language and vocabulary is terrific. I loved the down-to-earth individuality of his characters -- not surprising for an author who was from Missouri. He wrote Time Enough for Love in the Fifties, I think, but it was so far ahead of its time that it wasn't published until the Sexual Revolution was underway, IIRC. He coined "grok" and TANSTAAFL (There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch)... and described the modern therapeutic water bed (among many futuristic gadgets)... truly a Renaissance man.

Your description of your DIY hangeul studies is right in keeping with Odessa Jones's own methods of learning Korean: start with learning to read the language, because it will give you the correct pronunciation. Watch your favorite show raw with CC turned on. I like it! It was hard to find the link on her website, which is why I sent it to you. It's inspiring me, if only so I can read the names of bands and song titles in YouTube clips. (Yay! I can recognize Magma!!) Or one day have one song that I could sing in the highly unlikely event that I were dragged off to a noraebang!

After teaching ESL in Hawai'i, I applied to teach it in Japan. Other things in life intervened, and that didn't come to pass. I did, however, take a conversational Japanese class at a local church -- back in the days before online instruction, apps, etc. I couldn't handle having to deal with two writing systems, plus romanization for me was just as Ms. Jones states: a crutch that gets in the way. From what I've read, King Sejong had a brilliant idea when he devised hangeul as an alphabet perfectly mated to Korean phonemes. If only that had been the case for Irish! I took a conversational Irish class many years ago and could never get past the transliterations into Latin script, despite my Irish genes. ;-)

I sure did find you haha, no worries. There's this nifty little thing on the interwebs: press ctrl + f and you'll open a search bar. Comes in mighty handy when searching for comments from specific people on here (or when searching for a keyword you typed in in google, but can't seem to find on the site you open) :)

As a kid my dad once convinced me that Landungsbrücke wasn't far from Blankenese. It was 40 degrees Celsius. It was a very long walk.

Pffff, that's nothing! Try typing "Vor Frelser Kirke" on google images. That spiralling rooftower with rails you see? Yup. Climbed that. When I was a little kid. Alone. ALL the way to the top. And no, the railing isn't particularly high at the last part. Now THAT will give you shaky knees lol! I wonder if I climbed it because I love heights or I love heights because I still remember the feeling of being up there?

Nina Hagen! My parents loved her. She's pretty awesome. And I get what you mean with the music buying. My itunes library is gigantic and even after deciding to get rid of all the songs that are second-rate I still have 4000 in there with the number steadily increasing again. I'm currently only listening to Korean music, the fact that it's such a musical language makes it so perfect for singing I can't even handle it lol. Not so much KPop-Kpop (if you know what I mean), though I've been trying to catch up so that I will get all the references haha. I mostly listen to the bands/groups/singers more inspired by rock, indie or the singer-songwriter style. Currently all excited about FT Island's new stuff (yay for them finally being able to make the music they want to!), can't even count the number of times I've listened to 'Pray'. The drumming is INSANE on that one and the lyrics just really strike a chord with me (pun intended?). Also Nell's 'Green Nocturne', Drunken Tiger's 'The Cure', Winner's 'Baby Baby', 10cm's 'Sseudam Sseudam' (the lyrics with that melody! Has me cracking up every single time lol), JJY Band and PHS's 'Wildflower'.

I have to admit though that once in a while one of the very Kpoppy or hip-hoppy-Kpop songs really get to me with their beats - like Shinee's 'View', Rain's 'LA Song' or random BTS numbers. They're fewer between though, pop songs generally don't do much for me. Maybe because old school pop like Beatles and old MJ numbers is my first music love, the pop songs of today sound so boring and like they just want to show off vocal skills they ain't got. Waaaeee?? Don't record a song you can't sing live! Obsessing about the 60s and 70s as a teen ruined me when it comes to singers who use autotune. I'm getting more tolerant though, but only because Kpop groups at least know how to dance and never claim that all their members are great singers.. ANYWAY! Time to stop my rambling music rant before I don't even remember what I already wrote and start repeating myself ha.

Loved Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Anything old and/or Arthurian is a big hit with me, so it's a must ;) Have you ever read Monmouth's History of the Kings of Britain? Now that's a lot of fun! So many legend and myth origins from one of the most original sources available (including King Arthur, Uther Pendragon and Merlin) and I kept grinning to myself at the fact that people actually believed it to be actual history up until the 16th century. It has dragons. Who've slept under a rock under a water reservoir under the ground for who knows how long. And represent the Brits and some other people (kieogi an nayo) and will fight in the skies for a long time. So yeah... Proooobably not real. But who knows, right?

I've never been good friends with German cinema, I just can never bring myself to watch German TV and German doesn't sound good when sung.. so yeah... I don't really train it like I should. Tsk tsk Kaybee....

You should definitely give Verne a try! My favorite book as a kid was Around the World in 80 Days which isn't really sci-fi, but it's such a fun way to spend an afternoon or two. Ahhh, horse books... So many mornings spent reading Black Beauty, Black Stallion and a gazillion series of Scandinavian ones. Most of them were probably awful and I even remember registrering the fact that they weren't that well-written even as a kid lol, but they were such fun!
I'm halfway through the Sherlock Holmes series, but don't have time for them right now. I read the first Poirot book (having seen a lot of the series on TV), but then read that she was heavily influenced by Conan Doyle, so went back to the roots. Speaking of ACD - have you read his sci-fi? The Professor Challenger books? I read the first one and it was kind of fun, but not really that known.

Being able to read the group names and song titles on music vids is so great! Before then I was always confused when groups like BTS were introduced on variety shows, Happy Together and the like, but their name didn't seem to be mentioned. But now that I can read their hangul name, no more confusion ^^

Waaah... it's over 2am right now and I'm not tired, but clearly, judging by my rambling that might not even make sense, I really should get to bed. (also, did you see my comments made on a few of the newer posts here on db a little bit ago? I CLEARLY need sleep. I completely lost it in the thread about the new white collar crime/caper show with Seo In Guk. But it's just mean to put two of my favorite things in the same drama and post about it when I'm all tired and silly. I plead momentary insanity due to sleep deprivation! Or something... No? Doesn't work? Aishh....)

Aloha, Kaybee...

Sorry to skulk off for a spell. I got quite sleep deprived myself, and then it was time for OH HAE YOUNG AGAIN, which got quite intense this week. Have been comparing notes like mad over on the recap threads. This is why I can only live watch one show at a time... I go bonkers.

Where were we?

Oh, yeah, I apologize for the crummy splicing job on that last long message. I was out of it when I went to upload it. Plus, for some reason, the DB character counter was not working for me ever, at all, until yesterday... so up until then I didn't know how long my posts were, hence the messy amputations. Oddly, it started working within the last day or two. Weird.

Re: 39.2.4.2.4 Kaybee May 23rd, 2016 at 5:11 PM

I do indeed use Control + F, and it is a lifesaver -- and an eye saver. I was just grousing about the level and order of nested comments being knocked into a cocked hat. Hrumpf.

Landungsbrücke to Blankenese on foot in 40C/104F weather?!?!. Holy Moses, I didn't know it ever got that hot in HH. Auwe! We've had heatwaves combined with drought here in NJ in recent years that got that hot or even a bit hotter, and I think we encountered the same driving to Chicago in late June a couple of years ago during an utterly brutal summer.

I seem to recall trekking that route once; some of our classmates were staying in Blankenese. Just looking on the map the other day, it looks like more than a Spaziergang. -- All I can say is, your Dad seems to have an interesting sense of humor!

Yikes! Our weather on Thursday shot up to 32C, and will cool off to a bit over 30C today.

Re: Vor Frelser Kirke

Whoa! I've never seen a helical steeple like that before. Totally tubular, man! 400 steps to the top. How windy is it up there? -- Hmmm. "Not for the vertiginously challenged." I think that rules me out. Schade. But it is a gorgeous building.

Yeah, I was in my punk phase (musically, not sartorially) when Nina Hagen arrived on the scene. Punk was a palate cleanser after hearing too much cloyingly over-produced disco. ;-)

I've taken a listen to some of your Korean music titles. I think we have similar tastes in music, i.e., rock, indie, singer-songwriter. FT Island’s 'Pray' was terrific! Blew my doors off. I got a kick out of 10cm’s ‘Sseudam Sseudam’ - hilarious. It's so doggone happy. I'll have to get a listen to the others you mention.

Here's one from David Wilcox, one of my all-time faves. I heard him perform this as an acoustic solo before the album was recorded and it knocked me on my butt. I've never heard a dud from him, and have 4 of his early recordings, including "Nightshift Watchman" (also on YouTube) on cassette! I was thrilled to find it online recently as I have the CD stashed in a "safe" place. Listen with headphones! The separation is great.

Ya, Kaybee... back for more yakking.

Listening to 'Pray again. It is truly excellent. If I were on the air, I'd play it for sure... It interests me to learn that rock isn't particularly popular in Korea. I've recently gotten to hear some trot, and I kind of liked it. Magma -- egad, I love them.

Listening exclusively to Korean music ought to get your ears trained to the phonemes. If you can turn on CC to show hangeul, that'll give you quite a workout with your reading. Yay!

I recall coming across the work of an American teacher of German who noted that it's easier to sing than to speak, which can be helpful with pronunciation. (I used that idea to make pronunciation class for my Japanese ESL students more fun. It also gave the opportunity for conversation practice as we discussed the lyrics.)

I know what you mean about 60s-70s pop making current stuff sound kinda lame. Maybe 5 years ago I got to hear Jimmy Webb perform a passel of his standards: 'Galveston' and 'Wichita Lineman' (both big hits for Glenn Campbell), 'MacArthur Park' and a slew of others. He was a teenage prodigy songwriter starting in the mid-60s, just like Jackson Browne. Both guys with memorable turns of phrase and top-notch musical chops. And both still performing.

There's some great live videos of Jim Croce on YouTube that have brought tears to my eyes. He and his sideman Maury Muehleisen were the finest pair of guitarists and songwriters you could imagine, and turned out scads of 3-minute operettas that got me where I live every single time. No autotuning for them. Back in the days before MTV, I don't know how anyone on this side of the pond got to see BBC live studio concerts. Anyway, I never got to see any of those performances made before the plane crash that killed them in 1973, so it was like finding a time capsule. It was a blessing to see them after all these years. IMHO, one of their best is "Lover's Cross," but truly, they never wrote or recorded a dud.

Monmouth's History of the Kings of Britain sounds jolly, and is a new one on me. I wonder if my dad has read it. He's an armchair historian and linguist, and could have been a professor of dead languages, although his profession was engineering... What language is this phrase kieogi an nayo? Pictish?
As for how "real" some of it was... Didn't the Bard say, "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio,
Than are dreamt of in your philosophy."
Hehehe... I just carried coals to Newcastle.

I have a dim memory of going to the drive-in when I was little to see AROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHTY DAYS. My brother and sister and I were in our PJs in the back seat... and I vaguely remember an elephant running down the tracks in front of a locomotive in the jungle. And that's it. I probably conked out right after that!

Horse books. Ever read Marguerite Henry's Misty of Chincoteague about the wild horses on living on the barrier islands of the DelMarVa...

0

Uff da! -- So much for the character counter...

*waves at Kaybee*

Horse books. Ever read Marguerite Henry’s Misty of Chincoteague about the wild ponies living on Assateague Island? I think I devoured every book she wrote up to about junior high... They had dandy illustrations by Wesley Dennis. The two collaborated on nearly 20 books out of the 43 she published, her last one at the age of 94!

Re: German cinema. There's only a couple of films I've watched, and those were for class in Hamburg. Die verlorene Ehre der Katharina Blum -- Heinrich Boell's story set back in the days of die Rote Army Faktion and Baader-Meinhof, and Werner Fassbinder's Angst fressen die Seele auf, which dealt with Gastarbeiter, ageism, and racial discrimination. Just remembered going to a local college to see Klaus Kinski in Aguirre, the Wrath of God and Fitzcarraldo -- both of which were case studies in obsession and bats**t craziness. I'd like to see the first two again for old time's sake, but will pass on the latter pair. Korean movies are much more simpatico for my nervous system nowadays.

Conan Doyle's Professor Challenger is a new one on me. I see that he's based on another of ACD's professors of medicine. The guy sounds like McGyver. (Which is being rebooted. I'm not buying it if it ain't Richard Dean Anderson and his vintage mullet circa 1985!)

Just saw FT Island - I wish (좋겠어) MV. They are so niedlich! And the music is so happy and bouncy. Terrific!

You're making a strong case for me to get cracking on learning to read hangeul. I've already seen how handy it is when digging around on YouTube. I've been blissing out on the OSTs of some of the shows I've been watching. (SIGNAL -- which I have yet to see -- and THE CLASSIC are two that have grabbed me recently.)

Re: Sleep-deprived blathering on the Seo In Guk caper thread the other day. Yep, you were in rare form... And so was I by the time I popped over there to see for myself. ;-)

Methinks we've beaten this horse enough for the time being. I'm going to hele on over to OT#449 -- got some tidbits to post. See you over there? (They're already over 150 entries.)

Tschuueessss!

OHY -- I am loving it, but I so dread the episode(s) when our OHY will learn the truth. She and DK will both be devastated. I hope DK would be able to tell her the truth, rather than our OHY learning about it through a 3rd party/coincidently.

Refresh Man -- I didn't feel like watch episode 11. I read the recap instead.

1N2D -- I finally watched the first episode where YSY joined the show. He's such an honest, fair, and self-confident guy! I can't wait for missions/tasks that would put him out of his elements. I can't wait to watch the next episode this weekend!

I need to watch something else. Maybe Three Meals A Day, or Beautiful Gong Shim, or Discovery of Romance...

I stumbled across some clips from the OST of CLASSIC on YouTube, and now the earworms are duking it out in my head. Watched it early this morning after SUNNY...

Sweet story, and the music is terrific, with a lovely mix of classical and vintage pop. Pachelbel's Canon in D is one of my all-time faves.

Check out Daniel Kobialka's ethereal rendition from the album "Timeless Motion." Although I used it for my wedding, I haven't heard this version in a long, long spell, and had forgotten how truly evocative it is.

Pachelbel Kanon
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05Hr5-Ppzvo)

There's also a simply gorgeous arrangement for strings that combines the main theme(?) with elements of the Canon in D... A short segment of it is performed in practice by a quartet of schoolgirls. I'd love to hear a full take.

As for the film, the cinematography was lovely... The countryside was beautiful, with the rickety wooden footbridge across the river.

CLASSIC came out a couple of years after Cho Seung-Woo's film debut in CHUNHYANG, one of my faves. While watching, I suddenly realized that CSW in modern garb reminded me of Ryu Deok-Hwan in MY SON... The resemblance was uncanny. So that's why they were cast as twins in THE PEACH TREE!

One thing that I didn't realize until watching this film is that ROK sent troops to Vietnam, as did Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, among others. This is the kind of information that I don't recall hearing in the body counts on the nightly news in the US.

Hi OT,

I'm currently watching SIX FLYING DRAGONS. On episode 16 or 17 (thereabouts), and LOVING Gil Tae Mi.. I noticed this actor in Secret Love Affair and again in Punch, and really detested the characters he played in both. Which goes to show he's probably a really great actor. In SFD, again, his character is on the dark/evil side, but I have no complaints this time!

I kinda want to watch something light-hearted at the same time, cos the intensity (and length) of SFD can sometimes not match my mood.

What should I watch among the following:

- Bubblegum
- Sassy Go Go Go
- Plus Nine Boys

???

@ Beanfan

Something light-hearted? Hmmm... Bubblegum may not be sufficiently lighthearted... there were a few good times between the leads, but there was a whole lot of sadish times as well.

Sassy Go Go definitely ends on a happy high and parts of it are really fun and lighthearted too. It's about 60% light?

Plus Nine Boys has both frustrating and fun parts too... 50-50%.

More lighthearted than heavy... Marriage Not Dating, Heartstrings, Lie To Me, My Princess, You're My Pet, Rooftop Prince, and assorted Web Dramas. :)

If anyone wants to watch something short and totally relaxing... consider "Love in Memory". It's a six-part web drama of about 14 minutes per part and it's the most calm, relaxed drama from beginning to end, that I've ever come across. It's also without action.... all the action is in the pretty calm dialogue and some flashbacks which are the only parts of the show where there was less calm. LOL!

Might be good for anyone who wants to have sleep induced... and yet it is not boring (to me) since it involved figuring out communication in relationship which is always interesting to me. Simple, focused, got to the point and so it was actually calmly satisfying. :)

Hi PakalanaPikake! Look here!

Yep all Sunny members got expelled from the school. When the Sunny members were crying outside Su-ji's house, Chun-hwa promised that even if they were going to be separated, she will keep Sunny together. (That's why she apologised for not keeping the promise in her will.) I don't know if this helps, but if you're thinking of rewatching it: kiss asian . com/ Drama/ Sunny-2011/ Movie?id=14317 the subtitle quality here is really good. (Remove the spaces accordingly, I'm trying not to trigger the site filter...)

I think the US system is very different from ours. I'm from Singapore, so we follow the British system and graduate from junior colleges with an A level cert.

Regarding feminism in girl schools. I think I'm fortunate because my school is pretty liberal and puts a lot of emphasis on instilling feminism in the students. We were made to identify the gender stereotypes that were ingrained in us, re-examine and question our own beliefs and encouraged to be independent. The teachers weren't afraid to discuss about LGBT issues as well. But the thing is, my school is one of the most liberal in Singapore. There are many more people out there who fall on the more conservative side, or are simply misinformed about feminism. There are still some schools which continue to instill Confucian values, eg virtuous wives should be submissive to husbands, women should be gentle and demure etc. I think one of the most controversial incident in recent years was when AWARE, the main feminist organisation in Singapore, protested to the government about the tradition of singing a rape song during their physical training. The song is about raping an ex-girlfriend who had left while the man is serving mandatory military service. The government banned this song, but it created a huge backlash. Lots of men attacked AWARE's FB page and claimed that AWARE had no right to interfere in this 'army tradition' when women don't serve military service and that the song was something that bonded soldiers together. There were even many women criticising AWARE. I felt pretty disheartened over the entire issue and it made me realise that no matter how liberal my social circle appears to be, the wider society is not necessarily so.

And regarding the issue of abortion. I'm a free-thinker so religion never played a part in forming my opinion about abortion. Personally I hate it when women are treated as tools for procreation and I believe that women should have the right to make their own choices regarding their own body. I'm sorry to hear that your great-grandmother passed away from complications of childbirth. In the debate of whether abortion should be legal people always seem to forget how stressful and potentially dangerous childbirth is. It's not just the physical discomfort - what about the huge emotional stress that women go through during pregnancy? Especially when it's a pregnancy that they never wanted in the first...

Kaylie,

I'm back.

Thanks for clearing that up about SUNNY! After watching it the second or third time, I figured out that someone had gotten expelled, but couldn't tell who or how many.

I will watch again. -- Is this the director's cut, by any chance? - Thanks!

Ah, I visited your country in 1989. Only an overnight stop on the way back from our wedding trip to Hong Kong, Bali and Yogjakarta... My husband had done a lot of traveling in Australia, New Zealand, and Asia before we met, so we went to some of the places he'd been, with a stop in Hawaii on the way home to visit friends and family.

We got out our trusty Lonely Planet Guide when we arrived, and made a beeline for a highly-rated Indian vegetarian eatery called Komala Vilas, where the food was served on banana leaves. It was great! Omo! I just found their website. Am glad to know they're still in business.

We were in Singapore shortly before Diwali. Alas, the heat was too much for me. I thought I was going to sizzle and melt on the pavement. (What can I say? My ancestors were all from cold, damp, snowy places...)

I remember being struck by how wide the boulevards were. Like scenes of present-day Seoul with 5-7 through and turning lanes in each direction. I don't recall seeing elevated walkways, and couldn't help but get the feeling that it was tough to be a pedestrian there. That's going back nearly 30 years. It's probably changed a lot in that time.

Regarding schools: I've heard of A levels, but never knew what that meant. There are also O levels, too, right? Academic versus Occupational? (Here we have Vocational Technical high schools for students wanting to learn a trade.) By the time you're done with high school, you're half-way through college compared to American students.

At my high school, we had a couple of exchange students. I recall that a girl from Sweden was going to have to repeat a year when she got back... or maybe it was just that she'd have more years of schooling than we did. I seem to recall that in Germany, they also go to school for a couple more years than Americans do.

Interesting... More in the next post. -- Ciao!

Yes it's the director's cut!

Ah no, GCE O levels and A levels stand for General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level and Advanced Level. Usually you graduate from secondary school with an O level cert and then junior college with A levels. But some schools like mine are exempted from O levels so that students aren't burdened with so many national exams to sit for. For those who don't want to take the academic route they can enter polytechnics and graduate with a diploma. Usually it takes 16 years of formal education before you can graduate from university here!

You visited Singapore so many years back! I wasn't born until a few years later. Yes it's scorching hot here, but I'm so used to the sunny weather that I get a little depressed when I stay in winter countries for too long haha.

Oh, goodie, the SUNNY director's cut. Yay! With extended mayhem!

Re: Exams

So the only national exams at your school are the advanced ones, and everybody takes them?

How many subjects are you tested in? do they spread them out, or do you have to take them in one shot?

Are they essay or multiple guess?

In theory, 12 years of primary and secondary education plus 4 years of college at a degree-granting institution, is what it takes to earn a bachelor degree. (But some folks hack around and change majors repeatedly -- so it takes longer.)

Yeah, I kind of wondered if you were still a glimmer in your parents' eyes when I visited Singapore. ;-)

Being practically on the equator was truly a scorcher for me. Most of the time Hawai'i's trade winds kept it cool enough for me -- except when they petered out in late summer and "kona weather" set it and humidity built up. I think it was about a year before I acclimated enough to be able to wear jeans. Muumuus are much more comfortable. Back then, people observed Aloha Friday and wore aloha shirts and muumuus to work. Very civilized. But it was fine to wear them every day when I was teaching.

I bet you feel dreadfully deprived of sunlight in northern latitudes... When I studied in Hamburg, I'd go to my internship in the dark, and return home in the dark. That was in early December, and it was depressing as all get out.

Hi, Kaylie...

I popped over to the AWARE website. Very cool!

Wow. That's interesting how feminism is incorporated in the curriculum in high schools in Singapore. It almost sounds as if your teachers conducted what in the 1960s used to be called "encounter sessions."

From your description, it reminds me very much of my social sciences classes in community college. In addition to a year of sociology, I took Marriage and the Family, Deviant Behavior, and Physical Anthropology. The courses gave me new ways of looking at how individuals interact and institutions operate. It was pretty radical for me at the time, especially once my friend started metaphorically whacking me upside the head. ;-)

She also turned me on to the science fiction of Robert Heinlein. Time Enough for Love, Stranger in a Strange Land, and I Will Fear No Evil greatly influenced me... The author was quite a feminist.

But all the sociology classes in the world wouldn't have amounted to a hill of beans if I hadn't already started to wake up to the misogyny in church. Once the scales fell from my eyes, I couldn't un-see the abuse of power. But it still took a long time to make the final break because religion was so intimately entwined with ethnicity and culture. Leaving the fold in the old days would have meant being shunned. One of my great-grandfathers who had been a brother in a teaching order apparently declined taking Holy Orders, and his father never spoke to him again. He emigrated from Maritime Canada to the US. (Note: My folks aren't like that!)

I honestly don't know what is taught in US schools nowadays because I graduated so long ago. It also depends on where you are. I'm in a pretty liberal part of the US -- 40 miles from NYC. Other parts of the country can be quite conservative (e.g, the "Bible Belt").

I've been wondering how much influence Confucianism continues to exert, and find your comments interesting. Same oppression, different patriarchal system...

That odious song -- a marching song in basic training? -- sounds pretty bad. It's part of the "good ole boys" mindset. Do these guys who insist on singing it ever stop to think that she might have left because he was a sexist jerk who threw his weight around? Is this the kind of song they'd sing in front of their mothers, grandmas, and sisters? And how dense do you have to be to brag about committing a crime! This is not something that I'd admit in public. If esprit de corps relies on brutalizing half of the population, then you might as well let the enemy invade. Sheesh!

Q: Do male students get the same feminist training that girls get? I'm not quite sure how to phrase that... What I'm driving at is this: the consciousness of both sexes has to be raised. How is that done in Singapore? Until young men question the ugly aspects of the mindset exhibited above -- and replace it with something more humane -- nothing will change.

In A levels, usually each student takes about 6 subjects, General Paper (basically English), Project work and depending on your stream (science vs arts), 2 subjects from your stream and 1 from the other stream. Eg I was from science stream and I took Biology chemistry and Economics. We have multiple papers for each subject but spread over a period of about a month. The exam culture in Singapore is pretty intense, quite similar to Korea.

My secondary school was spared from the O levels, which is why we could afford to set aside a semester's worth of English lessons doing readings and essays on feminism. But the all-boys school that ours is affiliated to (we combine into a single school at junior college level) doesn't teach them on feminism at all. So yeah, like what you said, it's hard to change the society's mindset when only a small minority is exposed to the ideas of gender equality. In fact girls from my school frequently get labelled as overly-argumentative.

Regarding Confucianism, it's actually getting popular again in Asia. There are parents sending young children to schools dedicated to teaching Confucian values. There are many advocates urging Chinese to preserve traditional Confucian values. Personally I don't get the point of it because Confucian teachings are inherently oppressive in nature. You learn about respect, but that respect is based entirely on a strict hierarchy in which everyone has their own 'place' in society. I don't believe in respecting an older person by virtue of age if he/she doesn't earn the respect, just as how I don't believe a woman should be submissive to her husband by virtue of his gender.

Hi, Kaylie!

Sorry to take so long to get back to you.

Your exam schedule is incredibly rigorous. A lot has changed since I was in school, and US students now have to take standardized tests, if I understand correctly... but the Singaporean testing sounds even more stringent. I don't think I would have survived it. (Speaking as someone who graduated back when dinosaurs roamed the earth.) Wow...

Re: feminism in school curriculum

What a missed opportunity to introduce boys to a feminist point of view. They're going to encounter self-actualized women eventually -- so it might be better to get used to the idea at a younger age, rather than when they're older and set in their ways.

"Overly-argumentative" -- such a convenient label, and so handy for muzzling dissent. Not so different from the old Victorian precept that children are to be seen and not heard... Very demeaning and infantilizing. And a self-fulling prophecy, too. The more you're ignored, the louder you speak up, and the more you're accused of being argumentative.

It just occurred to me: Do parents get involved with or exposed to the feminism curriculum in your school? It seems to me that introducing it to parents and siblings might be one way to spread the lessons outside the classroom. It could help with osmosis into the rest of the school and the larger society.

One bit of sunlight for you: Although half the population of your school does not receive training in feminism, the other half does. Think of you and your Sunnys as being the yeast that leavens the loaf. It doesn't take much, but its effects are unmistakable. Or think of it in terms of homeopathy: Minute amounts of highly diluted matter, when properly succussed (shaken up), becomes a potent conveyor of subtle energies with healing properties. (I've studied biodynamic agriculture.)

Re: Confucian revival

I don't know much about Confucianism beyond what I've seen in Kdramas. Its emphasis on a highly-stratified society with a place for everyone, and everyone in their place, reminds me of the Great Chain of Being that ordered medieval society in Europe. I recall reading that in the old days, a person had to hold the rank of baron or higher to be considered a human being. Pre-contact Hawai'ian society was also highly stratified, and a strict system of kapu (taboos) existed to protect the mana (spiritual power) of the chiefs so that all of creation would thrive. For instance, not even the shadow of a commoner was allowed to fall on a high-ranking chief lest his/her mana be compromised and disaster ensue.

It's been driven home in any number of Kdramas I've seen that a person could not move up in social standing, although downward mobility into slavery was always a possibility. You were born into whatever status and/or profession your parents had, and that's where you were going to stay -- if you were lucky.

It seems that women were basically under house arrest. Aside from learning to read...

-- continued --

It seems that women were basically under house arrest. Aside from learning to read and write, if they were of the proper background, they still could not be scholars. And aside from the commoners, aristocratic women couldn't have jobs outside of running their own household. Without economic independence, they were at the mercy of their fathers, brothers, and husbands.

Q: Why do you think that people are turning back to traditional Confucian values? Is society unraveling in some way, and people are afraid and in need of the reassurance that a rigid social structure seemingly provides? -- Is this maybe a rejection of foreign influences, such as rampant materialism?

Q: When did Confucianism fall out of favor in the first place, and how long has it been? Is this something that has happened before, or is cyclical? Is the pendulum swinging from one extreme to the other?

This really interests me. I think that something similar happens in the US, in that in the past there have been periods of spontaneous religious revival, such as the Great Awakening.

Whew! I think I'll end here... Thanks for so much grist for the mill. ;-)
